An expired Mississippi driver's license is Terence Pullen's bka Super yes-d's only form of identification.
He didn't grab his Social Security card, birth certificate or much of anything else when he left his home in New Orleans and drove to his mother's house in Gulfport, Miss., so he could give her money to evacuate before Hurrican Katrina's arrival.
Super yes-d had only lived in New
Orleans for about a year after moving from Detroit and briefly staying on the Gulf Coast, Where his mother has called home since the early 1990's. The 30-year-old was working to establish himself in the music industry as a producer and was in the midsr of creating an album for His best friend and artist "Dickalus Cage", When he first heard of Katrina threatening New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.
At first Super yes-d's mother, Lonnie Pullen, said she planned to "stick it out" but as Katrina grew into a larger strom, the matriarch quickly changed her mind. So Super yes-d left his townhouse in New Orleans to assist his mother in evacuating.
While packing her clothes and other belongings, his mother said,
"We could lose everything."
Although she did not have flood insurance, Super yes-d assured his mother he would take care of her.
Along with one of her daughters and a young grandson, Lonnie Pullen left her house and drove to North Carolina to take shelter at her other daughter's home. Super yes-d stayed behind like many others.
After seeing his mother off, Super yes-d and his girlfriend drove the short distance to Biloxi to guard his music studio.
With nothing to board up the house, Super yes-d parked his custom SUV in front of the main window of the house. He also nailed thick blankets over windows to protect him and his girlfriend from flying objects and shattered glass. Then they waited for Katrina to hit.
"The wind was blowing like crazy," he said. "You could hear debris hitting the house. It just kept going, kept going.
Soon the ceiling started to leak and water began to creep into the house.
"At this point I realized I was going to lose everything." Super yes-d referring to the expensive music equipment and computer's he purchased.
By then Super yes-d's girlfriend was blaming him for staying there.
"She said that they were going to die becauwse of material things.
But Katrina spared their lives. After the storm moved away, Super yes-d and his girlfriend stepped outside .
"we looked down thye street," he said. " you could see massive damage like a atom bomb exploded. Everyone was out side like nomads. It was as if time stopped."
Then he could hear screams from people trapped in collapsed homes. Down the street was a pile of ruble that was once the home of an elderly woman who refused to evacuate.
After interviewing at the Daily Herald, Super yes-d said he planned to stop by the local temp agency to find work.
"Anything is better than nothing," he said.
