"Dick Siegel"

“Dick Siegel is a stellar songwriter, a superb guitarist, with a terrific voice and the sharpest of wits – just a great entertainer. It is no wonder that his fellow musicians call him a ‘songwriter’s songwriter.’” (Michael Erlewine, Founder of The All Music Guide)

"Siegel transmutes lyrical vignettes exploring longing, loss, memory, giddy joy and dread – the stuff of everyday life – into a reflective, utterly accessible personal mysticism . . . It’s the ultimate empathy.” (Detroit Metro Times)

“Dick Siegel makes music that is joyful to listen to. His songs inspire, make you reflect . . . he combines beautiful melodies with profound and often witty lyrics to create wonderful songs.” (Charly Mann, The Maverick Report)

“Someplace between Tom Waits and Johnny Cash lies the genius of Dick Siegel . . . Dick Siegel and the Brandos will shake up your audience, have them dancing in the aisles and rolling on the floor – they’re that good! (Craig Carrick, Carrick House Concerts / NorEast’r Music Festival Coordinator)

" . . . a soulful songwriter, a true and important original, with a robust creative vein solidly rooted in jazz, but also capable of expressing himself through swinging blues and R&B, through folk and rock with great naturalness." (Out of Time, Milan, Italy)

"For a man who can - and does - turn a single phrase as easily as Louis Jordan and write killer, hummable melodies in virtually every music in the American vernacular, Siegel somehow manages to top himself this time out." (Thom Jurek, All Music Guide review of 2002's A Little Pain Never Hurt) - Various Reviews

A Little Pain Never Hurt (2002)

Bio

Dick Siegel has been bringing his joyous, irresistible and penetrating musical vision to life for audiences across North America for more than two decades. Known as a "songwriter's songwriter," Dick is a member of the Metro Times Music Awards Hall of Fame, and was named in National Public Radio WDET’s list of the most important and influential musical artists in the history of Detroit (this list also includes such notables as Bob Seger, Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder). Dick and his songs have been featured on All Things Considered, Mountain Stage, and in SingOut! Magazine.

In 2010 and 2011, Dick was appointed DeRoy Visiting Professor in Honors at the University of Michigan. He developed a semester-long course for singer/songwriters entitled “Singing Out of Our Minds: A Singer/Songwriter Workshop,” which has been presented to students in the University’s Honors Program. Dick Siegel is also listed in Michigan Arts and Humanities Touring Program Directory for 2009-2012.

Dick teams up with Brian Delaney and Dave Roof as Dick Siegel & the Brandos to bring a new musical chemistry and excitement to listeners. The trio’s sound, like Siegel’s songs themselves, is extraordinary. It’s full of American Roots influence - blues, folk, pop, rock and jazz - and it’s strikingly modern. Siegel, Roof and Delaney are committed to pushing the limits of a string trio, squeezing every bit of music they can out of Siegel’s songs and their instruments. They are intent on breaking new ground to bring something powerful, significant and beautiful to their audiences.

Bassist-in-demand Dave Roof has been playing with Siegel for over ten years. He possesses a spot-on intuition for melody and rhythm, a terrific singing voice, and is a master of the Willie Dixon school of explosive, slapping upright bass. Roof also plays trumpet, guitar and piano, and has toured nationally with Tom Maxwell, as well as the Starlight Drifters.

Brian Delaney is a virtuoso musician with a taste for everything from the early acoustic blues and jazz he explores, to the electric rock ‘n roll he grew up with. He has played with seminal Ann Arbor bands, as well as with a gypsy jazz trio and the very successful vintage jazz group The Royal Garden Trio.
