Biography

"Seeker of Truth" is the result of a team work by composer and singer Dida Mendes, lyrical vocalist and vocal director Andréia Vitfer, and musicians and musical producers Fernando Santos and Juliana Alves. The CD tells about “Seeker” – a parody to humankind’s long (and tortuous) search for knowledge. Compositions and arrangements mix elements of diverse styles, including 70’s brittish progressive rock, classical music, musicals and Brazilian popular music (MPB).

“Dida Mendes, an extraordinary Brazilian composer and singer that also works as a psychologist, released his debut album in 2008. This is a conceptual work about human life and spirit, based on the writings of Constâncio C. Vigil, an Uruguayan writer who worked in Argentina in the beginning of the 20th century. It brings a smooth and involving acoustical sound, with choruses within a continuous progressive evolution. It is really a wonderful piece, with sounds and voice that fill the heart with warmth and, at the same time, with impressive melody and sophistication.”

… “The CD goes beyond London and incorporates influences of Brazilian popular and folk music. Instrumental and vocal melodies and arrangements avoid excessive experimentation and virtuosism, a characteristic of many progressive rock bands that is often criticized (not by this author, I should add). The result is a well-crafted alchemy”
Beto Vianna – MG- Brazil (O Cometa- Caderno de Artes, dec 2007 pg 18)

“I had seen Dida playing two tracks of his album at a gig. It was a simple guitar-voice arrangement, but it left no doubt - light progressive rock… at first, my naive optimism made me expect something like the ballads and lighter tracks of Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, with a touch of The Final Cut. Honestly, my expectations were met. It is a conceptual album, with lyrics that follow a chronological order, and with well put questions and answers – perhaps due to the author’s academic background in Anthropology/Ethology. I could draw few comparisons with what I know of prog rock, but this task was hindered by the fact that Seeker of Truth is a blend with unique spices.”

“…the majority of artists score in the 2.5 to 3.5 range in the various categories. When someone sees 4, 4.5 or 5 as their score in a category, that tells them, to me, they are in the professional league and have strong potential. It's a validation from a pro, letting you know you are doing a fine job. Well done!

Childhood Wisdom

Written By: Dida Mendes

(based on questions and remarks by Daniel & Diego)

Are there really guarding angels? Do they know which of us to guard?
How large was Noah’s Arch? Were the whales inside or out?

I’ve tried and retried but I can’t understand
Why the moon, so full at time, at other is so pale?
Why do drunks and begging children stare at me thru the window?
Would you tell me please what color is my skin and my race?

Does He really look upon us? Does He really keep on looking?
Does He really keep on looking? “Ain’t nothing better” for Him to do?

I won’t be hairy when I grow old, I’ll be smart and so rich
So I can buy me a jungle, a farm and a house so large
You can visit as you wish… the whole world will fit in
And the beggars there will dress up and smile

I’ve tried and “retried” but I can’t understand
Why the moon, so full at time, at other it’s so pale?
Why do drunks and begging children stare at me thru the window?
Would you tell me please what color is my skin and my race?

How long does Santa take to fly around the Globe?
How many coins must I collect to get me a brand new farm?
“Ain’t nothing better” for Him to do? 5x

Final Words

Written By: Dida Mendes

I could think a lifetime
No wit or logic sheds a light
Getting old is to decline
How simple things can be

Brand new each time
Old lights and scents
And pitches recombine
Rejoice to day a day

An old man’s mind is full of vices
He looks, he finds, whatever he wants

Let the children show us
In their ludic way
There’s always something new
Even in oldest events
Let laughter be truth of descent

Make Believe

Written By: Dida Mendes

Mind is make believe, a vague reality
Words that can talk and lights that make you see
Life is fantasy of sane humanity
Wolves that can’t pack and sheep that do not weep
A blue comedy played in your brain
A tragic romance with a predictable end

So let the play roll in your head
As long as you´re taking the lead
Making sense is just as easy
As lying in silence to yourself

Close your eyes and see
Just pretend you´ll be
Whatever fits in your plans
Whatever makes you feel safe…
At ease

Whirl of Senses

Written By: Dida Mendes

Welcome to the whirl of senses
First you grasp and then process them
Slowly at first until some day
Patterns emerge...
You may think you understand

Welcome to the road
That seems to never end
Ahead you’ll start to choose your path
Be aware... There is no map
After all, you may never understand

Puzzles that fit into frames
Not ever showing their faces
Hiding some pieces away
But even in doom you can see
Pictures that move endlessly
Pictures you need to name

Welcome to the world of maybes
Where in the end there are only
Basic senses that at first you grasped

All the rest: pure speculations
