"Did You See Those Bats-Interview"

Tell us about where you are from and how you got to this position today.
Our drummer, Eric Flores (ex-widows&orphans, The Secret Handshake) had opened for bands such as Dillinger Escape Plan, The Blood Brothers, and Vendetta Red, before joining DYSTB in 2008 with songwriters Chase Dungan (ex-Bicycle) and Joel Coronado (ex-The Haunt, Fat Maniac). Juanito Flores, Eric’s brother, joined in on bass and rhythm guitar and the newest addition to the group is our keyboardist, Freddie Tan. Each of us had been around the Austin scene and in and out of projects, growing our own ideas about the music we wanted to make until we found a really great line-up. We believe our current line-up is our strongest to date.

What do you have coming up? What are some of the new projects we can expect to see?
Expect to see a lot of shows in the near future as we keep promoting our live album, Live on KVRX. We’re also going into the studio very soon to record new material that we’ve been experimenting awhile with.

Tell us more about the current song you are promoting to everyone.
“Traffic/Cinema” was written collaboratively with individual parts of the song coming from different members of the band. We often open our sets with this one because it feels like a nice, high-energy introduction to the rest of our set.

How does your music separate yourself from other artists and bands out there?
We write to creatively and technically impress ourselves/each other. When we succeed at that, then we’re happy and confident that listeners can get lost within it. We try our best to balance the primal side with the technical side of instrumentation and have allotted moments in our set for experimental jamming and soloing.

Tell us about one of the hardest challenges you had to face in the industry?
Striking a balance between satisfying ourselves and satisfying the average listener has been a big challenge. It has also helped us tremendously as songwriters, trying to accomplish just that. We’re still on the hunt for the perfect vocalist, but otherwise, our only challenge now is to get out there and make a lot of noise.

What was one of the biggest set backs in your career and how did you bounce back?
We’ve had equipment stolen, line-up changes, dog bites, college, etc, but we’re a family and we pull through stormy weather just like any other family. *gulp*

What are some things artists need to be careful of?
Losing focus and motivation. Losing the fire at your back to keep creating, and of course, staying positive.

What suggestions do you have for other artists like yourself?
Write! Write! Write!

What is one of your favorite ways to promote yourself and your music?
Shows! Shows! Shows!

Where can people visit you?
Find us on Facebook, Bandcamp, and at Congress bridge at dusk.
