"OhMyRockness profile"

Brooklyn's Die Romantik, whose members originally met in Paris, got their name from a German compilation of romantic classical composers from the early 19th century. This is important background information because, well, their music sounds a lot like Paris meets moody romance meets the 19th century.

Their sound kind of falls in line with what fellow Brooklyn boy Beirut is doing... other-worldly nomadic notes that belong to another time and place. But mostly, this is entirely unique. I mean, Brooklyn bands generally don't have grand piano flourishes in their songs, but Die Romantik does.

When I listen to this, I think of castles and chandeliers. There is a definite darkness, or maybe it's just an overall sense of eeriness. But it's also kind of seductive at the same time. Thus, their name, I guess... Die Romantik.

Bio

About the band:
The three of us met in 1996, while high school students in Paris. We remained friends and occasional musical collaborators until formally launching Die Romantik in August 2005. We live in New York.

We pride ourselves in being a band, not a group of supporting musicians around a frontman. Each of us writes and sings his own songs, and we all work very closely on the arrangements. We value originality but our foremost goal is always the pleasure of the listener. We want to create music that can withstand complex and detailed evaluation, but can also be listened to lightly.

We hope by blending our individualities into a well-balanced and coherent single product, to create something unique, in which you can hear many influences, but always something new.

About the album:
Recorded in a remote cottage in the Catskill Mountains in June and October 2006, Narcissist’s Waltz is a collection of varied works by three musicians.

During the two weeks of recording in the Catskills with no contact with the outside world, we were able to fully immerse ourselves in our music. It is difficult to imagine a more ideal situation in which to deliver an honest performance.

The production on the album is deliberately raw, as we wanted to capture what the band sounded like playing those particular songs at that time and place. In our mixing, we placed high value on room microphones, in an effort to capture not only the full performance with the natural reverb of the cottage but even some ambient noise. We wanted to bring the listener as close as possible to being in the Catskills with us and hear the music the way we did while we recorded.

This album is a personal collection and record of over a year’s work captured in just forty minutes of music. We hope you enjoy listening to it.
