Dion Jones & the Filth

BandRockAdult Contemporary

Critics have stated that the band create "Delicious Music" (Andrew Weaver, The Brag) and that "Dion Jones is a white man with the voice of Nina Simone and the passion of Roberta Flack" (Erik Jensen, Drum Media).

Biography

Concerning their debut album 'Velvet Fever', critics noted that "Perhaps this album is what critics were expecting Jeff Buckley's album to sound more like" 4/5 (Mark Mitchell, The Brag) and that the band creates "epic pop that brushes past lounge jazz, big band funk and subtle rock as at rattles and soars to a lithospheric level of distinction" (Erik Jensen, Drum Media).
They have also stated that:
"An album like Velvet Fever is like seeing the sun for the first time after years of grey skies. Dion Jones & the Filth are acting as a living reminder of what music can be - if you're a fan of good music then the filth is your new 'must listen' band."
(Lesley Rickman, Neucleus UNE)

"This CD shows Dion to be one of the best local discoveries of 2005...It's the voice that is so noticeable and striking. The range is breathtaking and amongst very few I've heard in Australia in recent times. As long as Dion can write prolifically and sing with such skill, there is much to be optimistic about."
Carmine Pascuzzi, Mediasearch: Music, Film and Fashion in Australia

"I've just been listening to the new Antony and the Johnson's album and as I put yours on I thought 'Well, nothing will stand out for the rest of the day'. Not so! This is an awesome effort! Congratulations!"
John Carver, 3PBS FM

"A confident debut from this Sydney four piece - Velvet Fever is a strong excursion" 4/5
Evan Alexander, Tsunami Magazine

"A shimmering, well-crafted and touching collection"
Ed Montano, SX Magazine

Dion Jones & the Filth released their critically acclaimed debut album in May 2005 (released through MGM). They sold out the Metro in Sydney, the Hopetoun hotel in Sydney, the Vanguard in Sydney and they played to packed houses at the Ding Dong Lounge and the legendary Espy in Melbourne in their first run of dates for the album. Two single's lifted from the album received high rotation airplay on Nova 96.9FM in Australia and the band toured extensively with Sydney re-inventors of Soul - The Hands.

Lyrics

Angel Chimes

Written By: Dion Jones

Angel Chimes (Jones)

Blow up your strings and move down to a world
Where the clovers struggle on the wind
And some preachers arise with a lonesome song to sing
But nobody starts them to begin

I never thought I could turn you around
But you came true and that’s one thing I’ve found
Angel Chimes

Mother lovely is the tongue that we talk in
The town where the troubadour will sing

Do you know? Do you care?
Don’t you want somebody there?
When the bells in the market square don’t ring

Produced by Andy Clockwise and The Filth
Engineered and mixed by Russel Pilling
Trumpets: Andrew Halter.
Additional Lead Guitars: Andy Clockwise.
Recorded at Damien Gerard Sound Studios Balmain, Sydney, Sep 04

One Eye Open

Written By: Dion Jones/David Halter

One eye open (Jones/Halter)

Sometimes the feeling just don’t give a damn
When I’m all here by myself
And I didn’t know you, when you come around
And you walk into my room

All of this feeling isn’t going good inside
Cause I know just where you’re at
All of this feeling, is just not fair

When the coming day is dark
And you’re lost without a spark
I’m coming back for you
That’s why she sleeps with one eye open

All my visions fail/pale when she runs tonight
When we run tonight
All my visions fail/pale tonight

What do you want from me, can I tell you now
Do I dip my hat
Do I just lie down so you can walk over me?
Do all this and that
And all of this waiting and all of this hanging around
I’m still here by myself
All of this feeling is know no good for my health

Can I have your mother baby
Can I have another?
Can I have your lover baby
I don’t wanna miss all the good things

Gordon's Long Ride Home

Written By: Dion Jones

Gordon’s Long Ride Home (Jones)

I woke up
The sun was blinding my morning
Everything had changed
I woke up
The sun was blinding my morning
Everything was the same

Don’t you find it strange
Nothing comes to change?
Child talk to me
Tell me what I don’t understand

Gordon the long ride my take forever
And reasons sometime change
Gordon the short cut may well better
But that’s cheating on the game

Trumpet Andrew Halter
Additional Percussion Andy Clockwise
Recorded at Damien Gerard Sound Studios

Oh city lights burn my eyes
Could you be a lover in disguise?
Cover up my eyes

I've been down, down through the Holy town
