Bio

Dirty Birdz stand alone, coming at you like a blast furnace of sweat, soul and passion. The San Diego-based bundle of sonic dynamite packs old-school entertainment style and hard rock attitude into every huge fire-breathing note. This combination of soul-steeped rock n roll and hell-raising showmanship is difficult to capture in words and must be experienced live to be fully appreciated.
There really are no contemporary reference points for an act this big and this ferocious; you have to go back to a time when bands like Janis Joplin’s Kozmic Blues, Edgar Winters White Trash, Lydia Pence’s Cold Blood and Al Koopers Blood Sweat & Tears were storming the stage to make a visual connection. But the sound recalls the giant rock grooves early 70s Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin as well.
Ten pieces of pure pleasure, Dirty Birdz method features thundering guitars, a stabbing horn section and choreographed background vocalists beneath the screaming enthusiasm of lead singer Mercedes Scalzitti. The lanky, lusty vocalist is one part Janis, one part Etta James, and 100% incandescent energy, as she pulls a crowd in with her tigers roar of a voice and unrestrained stage antics.
While their delivery is very rock n roll, the sound is also hallmarked by a genuine feel for vintage black music that can only come from being serious students of blues and R&B. It's quite apparent that bandleader/guitarist Augie Scalzitti has been a lifelong devotee of such legends as Etta James, Ray Charles, James Brown and Freddie King. ?
Dirty Birdz are anchored by a monster of a rhythm section featuring bassist Steve Thurston and drummer Eric Menchaca. And The Horn Starz, the Birdz' badass brass section are led by trumpet player Robert Conrad, with Darrin Conway on trombone, Andrew Zahurak and Anthony Sarin on saxophones.
Together, it's a lineup that looks a little like a soul band of the late 60s', but with an attitude and attack perhaps unprecedented in the marriage of rock and rhythm and blues. True, Dirty Birdz features a gorgeous female lead vocalist, two sexy backup singers and a classy lookin brass section. But make no mistake, no motown cheese here. Dirty Birdz is a gritty, red meat eatin, rockin R&B machine that knocks the fillings out of the back of your teeth. Get yourself Dirty - check out the Birdz!!!!!!
