"Dirty Durdie: Dishing Out Diner Deliciousness"

If you’re sulking from the Patriots first loss of the season, I’m glad you’ve arrived here at The Echo Chamber Blog. This post — featuring talk of and fresh music from one of my favorite groups currently running around Rhode Island, Dirty Durdie — should at least keep your brain stimulated until you call it a night.
For those of you that have yet to hear the name Dirty Durdie, it’s likely that you a.) don’t read free newspapers like I do, b.) pay absolutely no attention to local hip-hop shows, and/or c.) were cheating on TECB with some other half-ass blog when I repped their single “Steamed Veggies” a few months back. Regardless of the reason, I’m thankfully here to enlighten you with all that concerns the rhyming duo of Dirty Ice and Durdie Furby.
First off, note that it isn’t just me that has been enjoying the Dirty Durdie sound — Motif Magazine had a mention of the two-man group, which came only shortly before the local publication awarded them as the “Best Hip-Hop Act” at the 2011 Motif Music Awards. Chris Conti of The Providence Phoenix also showed some love for their latest project Rhymanese Diner – which I highly recommend you purchase — in his article at the beginning of the summer.
They’ve made quite the impression on crowds, too, which is what should be happening when damn near every hip-hop welcoming stage that stretches from Providence to Newport has been blessed by Double-D. As an opening act for Kool Keith at The Met, accompanied by a friend rocking a giant green gut and a crown of soft-serve crap, they donned giant helmets along with hand puppets while reciting their rhymes. There is video to prove it. And that’s only one of their live performances.
Other video worth your time would be the Durdie Furby and Dirty Ice submissions to RA the Rugged Man’s “Most Murderous Lyricist Competition.” Iceman’s effort posed a threat to fellow Rhode Islander Milez Grimez (who ended up taking the win), getting (I believe) the largest percentage of fan votes, along with a number of votes from a who’s-who of independent hip-hop line of judges.
Needless to say, these guys have been doing alright.
Here’s a double-dose from Rhymanese Diner for your enjoyment. ”Gourmet Plate,” the solo joint from Dirty Ice…

…and Durdie Furby’s “What’s Your Poison?”…

Once you eat and drink up all of that, let us know what you think. And don’t miss what I’m sure will be another dope set from Dirty Durdie at The Bridge, this Tuesday at The PVD Social Club. - The Echo Chamber Blog

"Food for thought: DirtyDurdie"

Hip-hop duo DirtyDurdie have cooked up one of the freshest releases of the year with their Rhymanese Diner mixtape, out next week at their release party at the Rhino Bar in Newport. Rhody native Dirty Ice and New Bedfid-bred Durdie Furbie (aka Gremlyn) teamed up just over three years ago (both have been slinging rhymes for more than a decade), and have since shared stages with rap icons DJ Premier, Slick Rick, and EPMD.

The Rhymanese concept isn't far removed from what MF Doom presented on his 2004 masterpiece Mm . . Food, where he incorporated food-related metaphors and titles as a unique approach to bestow his bragadoccious bars. DirtyDurdie exude a more playful side on the mic, dating back to their 2009 debut EP The Big Dump and 2010's The Afterfunk (check "Party Floppin"). Their official full-length debut, The House That Hate Built, is slated for release by year's end. And while the fun continues across the Rhymanese Diner mix, DirtyDurdie's wordplay is far from campy, cornball material.

" 'Rhymanese' is the language of rhyme, so the concept behind 'Rhymanese Diner' is to serve you food for thought with the freshest local ingredients," Gremlyn said earlier this week. "The album takes place in a restaurant with customers ordering meals off a menu of our music."

Look no further than "Gourmet Plate" and "Steamed Veggies" for a taste of what this gifted duo is dishing. "This is a very sophisticated flavor" goes the sample, before Dirty Ice strikes with the lines "I'd rather starve than snack on anything processed/It's not even an option in my subconscious" and "I can fix exquisite dishes with limited ingredients and still be delicious/Listen, the Iron Chefs should've had me on their hit list." Durdie Furbie shines on "What's Your Poison," and arguably the tastiest dish on the Rhymanese menu in "Steamed Veggies," where he boasts, "Gremlyn's the nightmare you see in your daydreams" behind a solid beat courtesy of DJ/producer Vertygo (Rhymanese was recorded at Chachi's Beat Box Studios in Pawtucket).

Vertygo's beats pay dividends on "Braised PigLatin" and the clever "Who's Broker?," as well as Rhymanese standout "Crème Fresh," where Dirty Ice coolly boasts that he's "flyer than Ricky Steamboat." Dig in.

Bio

In May of 2008,"Dirty Ice" has paired up with "Durdie Furbie" a.k.a. Gremlyn, decided to formulate a strategy that could break the sugar coated shell covering the ears of hip hop listeners by being outrageous with artistic integrity. Together they have formed a group called "DirtyDurdie." Combining purism with putrid references to drive home points that not only invoke laughter, but also compel listeners to visualize some pretty nasty things. Building upon the likes of the late great "Old Dirty Bastard," "Red Man," "Sean Price," "C-Rayz Walz,"MF DOOM,” (and any other MC who was not afraid to go against the grain), "DirtyDurdie," is focused on forging a counter cultural library of raw music for fans of a sound thats not saturated with commercialism.

The duo command quite a presence when performing on stage. They use unrefined energy, well developed rhyme skill, and professionalism to engage there audience in spite of there lyrical content.

All of the beats have an emotionally charged pulse which becomes the perfect platform for these artists to "dump" there thoughts off. The conceptual chemistry between these two in this day and age is rare. The goal of the group is to prove that originality overpowers the regular "follow the leader" method of entering into the hip hop/rap industry!
"DirtyDurdies," message is clear "If its o.k. to stab, shoot, kill, kidnap, torture, split wigs, etc.., in music then why cant we rhyme about doo doo or, bad breath or, use metaphors that relate to garbage truck juice, I mean which is really more disgusting?"...

There first single "Who's Broker,"(as in poor) is not only ironically catchy but serves to almost poke fun at all the "MONEY music," that seems to be so POPular today. With songs entitled "Hot Garbage," and "Oyster Shells" one can only imagine what they have in store. There album "The Love That Hate Built," is currently under development.

"Dirty is the now, its the next, its the new, dirty is the style and we smashing it through, dirty is reality, dirty is the gimmick, we do the dirty work call us the games clinic, the viruses are getting stronger by the minute, WE DO THE DIRTY WORK CALL US THE GAMES CLINIC"...

Dirty Ice, one of the founding members of the New Bedford based Hip Hop group "Busted Fro" has been providing the Southern New England underground Hip Hop scene with solid spurts of music for over 10 years. His production credits include the self titled debut album "Busted Fro," two solo albums "Ice man: chronicles," and "Love songs: My Ugly Blue Heart," a pair of "Cerebral Cannon Collection," compilation albums and several other various artists/projects. His broad range of musical styles encompasses everything from classic "boom bap" to modern abstract hip hop. It would seem as if as soon as he's cornered into a particular niche he boldly establishes space in a new one. His Production technique and lyrical delivery comfortably range from downright filthy to outwardly prophetic. After completing his second instrumental album " W.I.C.E. Ice (26) Flavors," he went to complete studies at an audio engineering school in Arizona. After graduating he returned home ready to establish a stronger presence in the vast matrix of good and bad music that currently exists.

Durdie Furby, has been rhyming since the age of 12, and since then has found ways to perform and record with some of the southern MA. top acts. He has assisted in organizing educational community forums, parties, and musical showcases through out the city of Providence, RI. Beginning in his home state of Massachusetts in cities like New Bedford, Fall River, Cape Cod, & Boston. Additionally he helped helped orchestrate, basketball tournaments and break dancing competitions for The 3rd EyE Open Hip Hop Youth Festival at Buttonwood Park, in New Bedford, MA. from 2001-2007 (www.3rdeyeunlimited.com). Through this he has made a name for himself in Boston, MA. Continuing to spread the message and movement to Miami, Fl. as well as Providence RI, and surrounding cities. Threw his experience with the 3rd EyE Unlimited youth organization he has learned to edit video films, and promote events making him a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry. Durdie Furby is one of the alter ego's of the solo emcee from New Bedford, MA. named Gremlyn. The name Gremlyn stems from his ability to rip the mic, commiting lyrical havok, & “metamorphisizing” on stage into a monster who's unstoppable. Similar to the movie, a Gremlyn has many different characters. A few of his other aliases are Gremy Grem, Chocolificent, Gremblazo, Kylizleal, and currently Durdie Furby. As a soloist he has opened up for artist such as Kurtis Blow, Grand Master Caz, Melle Mel, Dead Prez, Keishia Kole, 112, Trina, & Slick Rick. He has also performed along side underground acts from the upper east coast ranging from Mega Millz, Chachi, Stars &
