Dirty Hurricane

Canadian based (Ontario) band “Dirty Hurricane” just released their debut CD entitled Rude, Crude, and Unattractive in 2013. Band members include Buzzsaw Bob Brown, (vocals), Smokin’ Joe Leskovar (Lead Guitar), Terry Riffgrinder Robertson (Rhythm Guitar, Vocals), and Pretty Boy Zimmerman (Bass) and Andrew Jebediah (Drums). One quote from them I like “We’re not trying to re-invent the rock n’ roll wheel, we’re trying to keep it rolling.”



The CD kicks things off into high gear with intro piece “Feelin’ Gary Payne” a grinding guitar driven groove meshed against driving rock rhythm, emotionally charged vocal delivery from Brown against impressive solo guitar. Track 2 “Lill Further Down the Road” serves up a rock steady groove against well placed Saloon-style Piano, solid low end rhythm section, impressive solo guitar and well placed vocal harmonies from Brown and company that takes no prisoners. Track 3 ‘Sally Friday” my personal favorite keeps pushing hard with its slithering guitar intro eventually lending itself into a pulsating rock groove with an infectious rock melody that flows and ebbs its way through to emotional fruition. As the CD unfolds I can hear many musical influences reminiscent of AC/DC, Airborne, Black Crows, Motorhead, and even Motey Crue. Right from the start you will notice these 5 lads feel quite comfortable just letting it all hang out musically, not holding anything back. The overall musical vibe has a nice, raw hard rock feel to it reminiscent of music popular back in the late nineties yet with a modern day twist and feel. The guitar playing hits you right between the eyes and dishes out impressive heavy R&B type guitar licks all built upon a solid low end rhythm foundation. The vocal timber from Brown is full of passion and recklessness abandon. The musicianship from all the other members in the band has everything you would expect from a no holds barred standard ho hold barred rock band. Besides the four piece standard I can also hear well placed Organ, lush vocal harmonies, impressive solo guitar, all built upon a thick as a brick rhythm section. The songs themselves are consistent musical experiences, each one possessing unique personality, flair and signature groove. From rocking “I’m Gone” to rock steady “Long Way to Go” to good time “Are You Ready” to melodic “Show me Your Charms” to hard hitting “C’mon C’mon” to melodic California Widow” this CD has something for just about everyone. The CD ends with Track 10 “King Stryder” the prefect finale statement for a CD of this caliber.



All songs over 3.5 minutes tend to drag you to the finish line. At the end of the day this 10 track catalogue is guilty of being a bit repetitive overall.



In close Rude, Crude, and Unattractive by Dirty Hurricane rocks the house and proves where there is smoke there is fire. From start to finish this CD is an action packed production from start to finish. It’s strong suit – its raw feel almost as if you were watching a band play in a live setting. If these guys have a slam dunk live presentation then that would be a deadly combination indeeed. The songs are extremely heavy, melodic, passionate and powerful. This band will no doubt get your adrenalin pumping. Yep – it looks like Rock n Roll wheel is still rolling along just fine.

Let’s be honest for just a second shall we. I get a lot of albums sent my way for review and I mean a lot. Most of them don’t do anything for me. They don’t always get happily placed in the CD player, but the ones that do usually get a three song stay of execution and generally if they last past that they get my full unadulterated attention. Sometimes I’m hooked from the first track, and that’s precisely what happened when I put the latest release in by Canadian based Dirty Hurricane entitled Rude, Crude & Unattractive. The album bursts to life with the fantastic rocked out fusionist sound and follows through with a wonderful sequence of songs, ten of them to be exact. It twists and turns the way great albums should with a little bit of rock, a little bit of high octane driven rock n’ soul and a lot of harmonic goodness. Dirty Hurricane are Bob Brown – Vocals — Joe Leskovar – Guitar,Vocals — Terry Robertson – Guitar,Vocals — Roy Zimmermann – Bass Guitar — Andrew Stevenson – Drums,Vocals. I really like to song line up – the way each song transitions through to the next creating much in the way of a party gone out of control. So many bands and record labels get this basic skill so wrong. They fail to listen to the songs at their disposal and seemingly throw the album together without giving it any real thought. I’ve known people who work to formulas making sure that their best songs start and finish the album with the remaining tracks squeezed between in a slapdash fashion. That’s not the case with Rude, Crude, & Unattractive in fact each track could probably survive on its own merits, but the album just flows so well. Dirty Hurricane could easily heralded as classic sounding classic-rock but there is so much more to them. I hear Lynard Skynard, The Black Crows, Barefoot Truth, and even Humble Pie. Some pieces stand out like the more appealing to a mass audience “Sally Friday” and “Long Way to Go” but there is a deeper and sharper edge to songs like “I’m Gone” and “Show Me Your Charms”. The strategic interweaving of systemic melody and impressive rumble tumble vocal performances from Buzzsaw Brown are a delight, but the solid rhythmical foundation of this band is essential to their artistic and commercial potential. The sound is that of the golden era of popular music in the Sixties and the Seventies when musicianship did matter! But the beauty of this record is the use of all mod-cons forcing Dirty Hurricane’s strong relevance into the modern world. The band should achieve good support from radio and appear to be critical darlings of the Toronto area, but I am left bemused how they are not yet a household name. It’s not a case of all the elements being present but the final product being missing as the songs, the musicianship, the production, and the performance all knit together beautifully-even brilliantly. Maybe I’m lucky enough to be in on the ground floor? Maybe things are just about to kick on for these guys? Whatever it is make sure you get hold of this album. Rude, Crude, & Unattractive is a must have and in the class of al by itself. Looks like Rock n’ Roll is still alive – especially up north.

This 5 piece rock band from Toronto, Canada who calls themselves Dirty Hurricane. Their latest release: Rude, Crude & Unattractive is sure to be remembered as one of the classic "good tyme" rock releases of our time. Its pure party rock the way it used to be via full-tilt of playing, hooky grooves and a top tiered sound. It's the ultimate in musical intoxication. Before I get to the review let me first say Rude, Crude & Unattractive will take you back to a simpler, happier more carefree time. A time before artists started hanging out the dirty laundry to dry on the radio. Yes that felt good to say! This band opens with "Feelin Gary Payne" a crisp fast paced number with guitar, drums, bass, and solid vocals from lead singer Buzzsaw Brown. "L'll Further Down the Road" takes it to another level with it's classic rock vibe, perfect for full tilt club atmosphere. The 3rd track "Sally Friday" lets it all hang out with catchy vibe, energized musical landscape full of power and intrigue of life's burning embers. One thing that impressed me about this album is the attention to detail, there is an ambience that really sucks in the listener into their world. The instrumentation and tones give you that genuine feel of good music from generations ago, it ironically has an American. All members are solid visually and musically. Band members include: Bob Brown - Vocals -- Joe Leskovar - Guitar/Vocals -- Terry Robertson - Guitar/Vocals -- Roy Zimmermann - Bass/Guitar -- Andrew Stevenson - Drums/Vocals. Vocalist Brown takes the lead even throwing in amazing intensity. In many ways Brown is the strongest card in Dirty Hurricane's arsenal. Rude, Crude & Unattractive captures the adventurous spirit of the classic southern fried rock which will ring true not only for old listeners but new ones as well. They remind me of a cross between ZZ Top and The Rolling Stones. This latest release wraps up a well rounded and interesting cross section of classic Progressive Rock, Funked out Rock and Psychedelic Americana popular in the 60s and 70's all the while maintaining a modern-day musical feel. How is this possible? Only an experienced bands can pull it off. Sad to say music like this is sorely missing from the 2013 repertoire. Dirty Hurricane more than fill this musical void, they can hold their own against any hot running band out there right now.

One might expect 5 piece Rock band Dirty Hurricane lead by vocalist Buzzsaw Bob Brown from North of the border (Toronto) to deliver music that could be categorized as say over the top, overly dark and excessively flashy. I mean this is 2013 and before I even listened to a single note of music from Dirty Hurricane’s latest work that’s honestly the impression I got. I expected them to be a kind of flipped out 70’s throwback band with excessive musical showboating and excessively dark messages coupled with neurotic musical meandering. To sharpen my skepticism over the years I’ve heard my share of Throwback CD’s – and much of it is lacks a unique freshness or mass marketability appeal. However there’s a real sense of musical independence here via this latest self titled work by Dirty Hurricane – which includes: Bob Brown – Vocals — Joe Leskovar – Guitar,Vocals — Terry Robertson – Guitar,Vocals — Roy Zimmermann – Bass Guitar — Andrew Stevenson – Drums,Vocals. While everything here is shall I say exceptionally entertaining, and it all covers a pretty wide range of musical styles, a few tracks stand out from the rest for me in particular. “Feelin’ Gary Payne” and “Lll Further Down the Road” are one hell of a dual opener and delivers a music that can be described as pure magical mojo. While the movement presents a straight ahead rocked out guitar ambience, somehow this music has more of an organic feel as the first track hits solid stride. This is definitely a modern example of classic hard rock cut from the same cloth as Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Motorhead, and Rainbow. Durty Hurricane possesses a slight Old School Rock sound reminiscent of the days where Black Crows, Thin Lizzy, Gov’t Mule, North Mississippi Allstars, and Allman Brothers ruled the airways. Because Dirty Hurricane as this classic reto-rock style and I suspect many of the previously mentioned bands have had an influence. The musicianship from all members is how shall I say – off the chain. The guitar front from Smokin’Joe Leskovar sets the standard and is beyond impressive. There’s plenty of cool guitar riffing, bass playing that sits deep in the pocket, and impressive timekeeping that sets the standard – but above all it shows just how far Buzzsaw and company navigate with sheer precision through the uncharted waters of retro hard rock.

So are you thinking what I’m thinking? Somehow all the above is not compatible with the superficial musical times we live in. Dirty Hurricane is one band well-suited for audiences that enjoy all the typical conventions of hard rock and more. Even slight elements of Metal and Progressive Rock. Expect great things from Dirty Hurricane as their fanbase expands out of Canada. There’s obviously a disgruntled Hard Rocking audience out there just waiting for them to arrive with open arms.

So what is Avant-Garde? Avant-garde quite simply represents a pushing of the boundaries of what is accepted as the norm or status quo primarily in popular culture. The notion of the existence of the avant-garde is considered by some to be a hallmark of modernism. I like to think of it as uncharted water. So enter Dirty Hurricane a 5 piece Rock n’ Roll band based out of Ontario, Canada. I get the impression these 5 wanted to smash through the modern mold of traditional rock and go back in time a bit with their more retro 70’s sound. In this aspect they are kind of Avant-Garde right? Their latest10 Track CD entitled Rude, Crude & Unattractive is a rocked out, good time, exciting album full of music that can be listened to in any situation. The songs on the album are a mixture of music that will encourage you to tap your foot, get rowdy but also offers a wide variety of emotions and subject matter. All 10 tracks provide a intensely exhilarating experience that can tingle the senses into submission. In this aspect I think I get Dirty Hurricane 100%. Indeed over the years music is best enjoyed loud for many different reasons. Some feel music is a way to buzz the senses during any activity – concerts, clubs, dancing, exercising, getting drunk, all of the above and more – you get it. Some want to go deeper and darker. Music reminds me of The Smithereens, Rolling Stones and Grand Funk. From one of their more rocked out tracks “Sally Friday” and “C’mon C’mon” to more straight forward “I’m Gone, “Feelin’ Gary Payne”, and L’il Further Down the Road” this album covers a lot of territory. Rude, Crude & Unattractive offers an ample listening environment with a rock steady sound that sets an intensely creative/subjective mood. This will encourage the listener to delve in life’s good times, no matter what the circumstances. These 5 Cannucks deserve a lot of credit for bringing all this together. As a result Rude, Crude & Unattractive is an interesting avant-garde musical project worth checking out. Their energetic, stimulating sound can be appreciated by anyone that enjoys music, even those who typically may not enjoy one particular genre. I enjoyed this album sitting on my couch on full blast, with eyes closed eager to see where the musical journey took me. I must also admit I was shall I say impaired at the time, and the experience was that much more exhilarating and stimulating. This sounds so simple but it’s in this setting Dirty Hurricane will work its magic to the fullest potential.

Review: Their latest CD entitled Rude, Crude and Unattractive was released in 2013. I have to say I was extremely impressed with the opening 3 tracks “Feelin’ Gary Payne”, “Lil Further Down the Road” and “Sally Friday”. They made quite the first impression and each one possessed my full unadulterated attention. To be honest: I expected cheesy Indy Hard Rock that was extremely predictable and shallow in nature – very compatible for a mass audience. What I discovered was actually quite the opposite. The whole CD is wonderfully conservative yet full of what I would call explosive full-tilt energy with music that appeals to so many different senses on so many different levels. It reminds me of classic Led Zeppelin, Foghat and even AC/DC. On the other side of the sonic spectrum I can hear Velvet Revolver, Guns and Roses and even Marc Ford. I can also hear the slight Alternative Rock, Hard Rock, Classic Rock influence in there as well. What I really like about Dirty Hurricane is no attempt to sugar coat the truth or deliver what I call over the top alt rock. Cheezy music with an over the top front man via top flight sampling, cookie cutter songwriting via a mix that sounds more like a commercial than a piece of music. None of the above here! Rude, Crude and Unattractive will also appeal to both advanced and novice listeners alike – but make no bones about it this is Rock n’ Roll. Whatever kind of listening level you’re on – some will identify with things while others will not. Like a three layered cake Dirty Hurricane is one band that has a lot of depth and has so much to offer. Weather it’s musically, lyrically, inspirationally, emotionally, spiritually – if you feel like music is taking us in the wrong direction than rest assured Hey Sugar is taking us back in the right direction with this release.

Bottom Line: Dirty Hurricane will affirm your faith in good Rock n Roll again. They are a unique, hard working rock band that knows their way around a stage as they are currently on the Warp Tour. At the end of the day Rude, Crude and Unattractive is one hell of a wild ride and delivers 10 solid tracks. Dirty Hurricane delivers action packed musicianship, entertaining songwriting and music that covers all the bases: Alternative Rock, Hard Rock, Classic Rock.
