DIRTY LIONS
SONIC ESPERANTO
Since we started the Trumpet at the end of April, we’ve been blown away by the talent we’ve stumbled upon right on our doorstep. Like a ripe Florida orange, we’ve been massaged and squeezed until our juices are freely flowing. And just when we think we’re down to the pips, something else comes along and knocks us bandy.
Cue Dirty Lions and their deliciously dirty jazz. A rollicking roller coaster of bluesy licks, boot-slapping rhythms and belting soul – just what the doctor ordered!
But should we be surprised? Break down the band into its individual elements and you’ll find a recipe Jamie Oliver would be proud of. With drummer “Jim” Bowler and bass Lol Dalziel (who locals may recognise from Medicine Hat) shaking the ground and the electric fingers of Ken Day plucking at your brain-strings, bringing Mark “Dusty” Wright’s songs to life.
Then there’s Michelle Jimenez-Alder, as sassy and soulful as any Joss Stone, injecting her heartfelt lyrics slap bang into your now-
pumping veins. Pukka stuff! We’ve not had a chance to see the band live yet, but reports we’ve had back from the recent Woodfest event suggest a barrage of energy and verve. True talent always sounds better live!
Most importantly, Dirty Lions are trying their hardest to come up with new and exciting songs, a kind of “Sonic Esperanto”, all driven by the desire to make your listening enjoyment as pleasurable as possible. Like other bands we’ve met so far on our Trumpet journey, all members are involved with other musical or theatrical projects, a dynamic which brings a complete, almost holistic feel to their art.
As far removed from the mainstream, Wallace-and-Gromit-style dog food machine as you’re likely to get and praise be for that!
So as far as juices are concerned, Dirty Lions have turned the taps full on. Keep your eyes on the Trumpet for on-going goings-on and follow the pride on Facebook for news of upcoming gigs and releases. - The Trumpet
