"Garage Band Idol"

Normally, I ignore submissions that don't come from the artists themselves -- I don't wanna burst someone's bubble unless they're asking for it. But I'm gonna make an exception in this case for two reasons: 1) These guys are probably the first Canadian Rock en Espanol band I've come across, and; 2) Their amalgam of funky grooves, slinky guitars and rolled-r vocals is actually pretty killer. The woman who sent me the link pointed out "you don't have to speak Spanish to be a fan," which is true. Though it helps if you're a fan Cafe Tacuba, Mana and Molotov.

Bio

Dirty Maria exploded into Toronto’s music scene in early 2004, when the four members decided to establish the first Latin alternative rock band in the city. Since then, band members Marino Ojeda (bass), Saul Torres(vocals), Kevin Mata (drums/percussion) and Alex Berben (guitar) have continued to apply their passion and musical talents to create a sexy and fun blend of traditional Latin American rhythm with influences of jazz, funk and rock.

Their unique compositions consist of lyrics in Spanish and English, covering a variety of topics ranging from comical life situations, to politics, to sentimental moments. The boys of Dirty Maria come from different parts of Latin America, and each has a unique history of musical experience, contributing to the band’s original and tight sound.

Dirty Maria has been getting the public’s attention since they won at the 2004 Latin Alternative Music Conference in Canada. In 2005, they recorded their first album which was released in early 2006 and nominated for best world music album at the Toronto Independent Music Awards. Since then, the band has played for crowds of thousands, in concert at various cultural events organized by the Mexican consulate and Latin American associations. They have opened for Grammy Award winners Café Tacuba and Kinky, as well as performed in various charity events and local venues including Lee's Palace, the Horseshoe Tavern, the Opera House and the Hard Rock Café.

Crowd reactions to the band have been astoundingly positive, appealing to a fast-growing audience of listeners and hardcore fans. Dirty Maria has also been featured in an assortment of TV shows (OMNI2-Metropia, TLN Telelatino), radio programs and newspaper articles.

Currently, the boys are in the studio recording their second album with renowned producer Michael Jack. Official release dates scheduled for Summer 2010. Be sure to catch Dirty Maria on tour this summer, where they will be promoting their new album full of high energy rhythms that will move and uplift you.
