"Beating their own drum online"

BY NAWAL QAROONI

The members of Disaster Us, a rock band made up of three Middlesex County natives, had endured years of frustration with the New Jersey music scene when the group's leader decided it was time to take control.

Realizing that hundreds of bands before them found it difficult to get noticed in an atmosphere of unforgiving audiences, Sol Caceres, 28, launched a download-only record label called Attic Tan Records (www.attictanrecords.com) in April. The effort materialized after months of production.

"It's an effort to get hyper-local bands noticed," said Caceres, of Perth Amboy. "Big record labels are wary now of theft and online pirating, but we're embracing it."

Caceres, his brother Abe, 21, and Laura Roberts, 22, of Freehold, manage the new label from a Woodbridge studio between day jobs. Sol Caceres, who designed the Web site, said it didn't take money, but it takes time, energy and commitment to keep it going.

"Being in the music business for several years, the networking was at our fingertips," said Caceres, who works in West Caldwell at a printing facility during the day. "We put out one song demos for each signed band, then we pay the band depending on the contract we give them."

So far, Attic Tan Records has signed just a few bands, including the Mean Mistreaters, a punk group known among music buffs in Middlesex County. But Caceres said word has been spreading. Bands have nothing to lose and it creates an additional outlet to promote their music, he said.

"Our goal is to create a community of bands that can run their own scene," Caceres said. "Now there are a bunch of bands out there doing their own thing, but they're divided. This is a way to bring them together."

Bob Albert, owner of New Brunswick's Court Tavern bar and concert venue, agreed Caceres' idea is smart. The town formerly had a thriving music scene, but Albert said that has changed since the late 1990s with the loss of several bars in New Brunswick where concerts could be held.

"I've been booking bands here since '81. At the time there were about five bars like mine," Albert said. "The scene was so vibrant and fertile, and a lot of musicians moved here. But we're the last one standing, and you can't really have a music scene without competition."

Albert said his family-owned bar used to receive about 100 press kits a month from musicians hoping to get exposure. These days, they're getting four times that number, he said. Lack of available venues make it important for bands to get noticed elsewhere -- on the Internet or however else they can manage to get their sound out.

Brian Garrity, senior business correspondent for Billboard magazine, said record labels used to secure the distribution of CDs, but things have changed.

"The Internet empowers all sorts of players to get into the game who otherwise might be blocked by distribution hurdles," Garrity said. "Now the hard part is effectively marketing and building an audience, and finding the right vehicles for funding."

Garrity said hundreds of bands are responding to technology by self-releasing their music on the Internet, particularly through networking sites like MySpace, where consumers can now buy music. The sites are giving bands the ability to get their music to the public, and even major labels like Warner Music Group and the Universal Music Group are experimenting with Internet distribution deals. Still, Garrity called their efforts "very limited fringe-activity."

"The fact is, anybody and everybody can put themselves up on the Internet," Garrity said. "But this is an attractive opportunity that, in the early stages, can be an effective model. I don't know if anyone is getting rich off it."

At $1 per downloaded song, the members of Disaster Us are not making millions. But they say they're dedicated to boosting the state's rock scene, and they hope their label is a start. They'll have a booth at the Warped tour in Camden this summer with promotional materials.

"There's a lot of local music out there that's really good," said Steve Petras, a 33-year-old guitarist from Woodbridge familiar with Distaster Us. "At least Attic Tan is making the music available."

"Attic Tan Records Leaps Headfirst into the Digital Music Scene"

(PRLog.Org) – Woodbridge, NJ May 8, 2007- Instead of condemning the state of our rapidly changing music industry and ignoring the thousands of unsigned bands’ pleas for label help, Attic Tan Records.com offers some digital assistance.

With an eye catching website that represents its bands with pictures, MP3’s, and CD release information, Attic Tan Records, located in Woodbridge, NJ boasts its mission statement in it’s “About Us” section on its website with a clear and defined message that would entice any unsigned band to send them a demo. “There are so many local, unsigned bands in the area. I personally know quite a few. I know they will continue to play locally and nationally and won’t have the representation they need to keep pursuing their musical dream”, says Solomon Caceres, founder of Attic Tan Records, lead guitarist/vocalsit of "Disaster Us" and founder of “Dehumanized”, who are signed to New Red Archives, a San Francisco based record label owned by Nicky Garrat of the “UK Subs”. “With this label bands can create a community of their own by logging into our forum”. The forum, which is comprised of several topics ranging from the silly to more serious, shows the potential of the impact the website will have on its visitors.

Another great aspect of Attic Tan Records.com and what sets it apart from other record label web pages is that it’s an MP3 download site with its sole band, “Disaster Us” at the top spot of its download charts. “We feel this is a great site for our band and it’s a great record label overall. They continue to work hard by promoting and supporting us as we work hard by playing shows and touring”, says Laura, bassist of New Jersey based punk rock group “Disaster Us” (www.myspace.com/disasterus). “This label rocks”!

Attic Tan Records plans to release a compilation album by the end of summer 2007 of several selected bands from the New York, New Jersey, and California areas to be distributed nationally and available on their site for digital download as a follow up to their first release of the “Disaster Us” first full length album, also available through their site for download.

Bio

The unstoppable punk rock trio which makes up DISASTER US started in New Brunswick, NJ in early 2005 as a local bar band. By playing locally at several of New Jersey’s bars and clubs, the band decided to release demos and expand their musical capabilities. Since then, DISASTER US has played all around New Jersey, New York, Philadelphia, participated in rock festivals such as The Emergenza Music Festival, and made it to the semi-finals, created East Coast tours for themselves, gained dedicated fans, created videos and have appeared at The Warped Tour 2006 with their own tent (and will appear at Warped Tour 2007, Englishtown, NJ) promoting themselves by selling their CD’s, T-Shirts and getting fliers out for their gigs. They have also went a step further and created their own record label, “Attic Tan Records”,(www.attictanrecords.com) and put out their own first full length CD available for purchase at CD Baby, as well as promote and create gigs at several clubs for their local scene. DISASTER US includes Sol on guitar, Laura on bass guitar and Abe on the drums. Each member strictly and persistently uses their talents to form the thick, substantial sound of DISASTER US. With influences combining the rawness of The Clash, and the catchiness of The Police, DISASTER US' melodic style leaves listeners wanting more! With Sol’s wicked musical ear and history of unparalleled previous band structures, he effortlessly simulates what churns in his head to channel through on his guitar, hitting riffs and licks that totally shred, while still belting out emotionally powerful and catchy vocal lines. Meshed with their snotty lyrics, his voice carries the perfect dimension for the band! Laura on bass provides the backbone of the band kicking out fanatical down-stroking rhythms similar to that of The Ramones. Her steadiness and control offers incredible uniformity which poisons listeners to prepare for more! Combine all this with the skin destroying beatings of Abe on the drums and call it DISASTER US! This drummer hits the set with such force and relentlessness ones stomach could pound for hours after a live show! Securely changing beats with a razor sharp edge compared by some to Stuart Copeland, he firmly punctuates every song to a crisp. So hold onto your drinks and see for yourself how DISASTER US can truly illuminate even the darkest stages!
