Disgust of Us

Self titled debut, Disgust Of Us, is a post punk album and has also been billed as “gentle core”. Definitely rocking but tempered by the vocals of Cheryl and filled out by Patrick (no last names given). Poignant lyrics are beautifully delivered along side the hard post punk sound. The conflict between a hard and soft sound is well balanced and makes for a good listen.

Poised as a hard-hitting rock band, Oakland's Disgust of Us revolves around a gentle core. Cheryl Martinez's softly sinister vocals and a pronounced melody often give way to a fierce chorus featuring Patrick Thomas' searing background vocals, but the overall effect is balanced and musical. Such dynamic, compelling songcraft is worth a listen.

Whether acoustic or full band their music is heartfelt and believable. The acoustic version invoked the uneasiness of witnessing a gut-spilling where you know you're seeing an open book and its believable the delivery would be the same whether in front of one or one thousand people.

A short mini-album (just under 30 minutes in length) from Oakland, California's Disgust Of Us. These folks have a cool underground guitar-driven sound that is characterized by some uncharacteristically nice and soothing female vocals (something one doesn't normally associate with a hard rock/pop band). The band consists of Cheryl Martinez (vocals, guitar), Patrick Thomas (vocals, guitar), Laura Bagnato (bass), and Sam Banker (drums). Some of the tracks on this album are slightly reminiscent of 1970s progressive rock bands while others take a more direct modern approach. Interesting stuff, these folks are off to a great start here. Top picks: "Tick Tock," "Homemade Haircuts," "Regret Regard."

Armed with the sonic intensity of Sleater Kinney and the heavy pop melodies of San Francisco's now-defunct Glitter Mini 9, Disgust Of Us' Our Error is a hard-hitting debut. The Oakland quartet has built a steady live following over the last few years and as a result, the numbers here sound road-tested and confident. Singers Cheryl Martinez and P.J. Thomas share vocal duties like an East Bay version of X, and their interplay is as natural as it comes. "Happy In A Japanese Jail" is a frenetic blast of nervy post-punk; the crushing and melodic "Love Loves Lust" sounds like Exene Cervenka at her most vital and "Harvesting Hearts" is a driving number that wouldn't have sounded out of place on the aforementioned Sleater Kinney's All Hands On The Bad One. Later, "Mousetrap Mind" is a stinging winner; "Baltimore-Berkeley" manages a fierce prowl and the pounding velocity of the closer "Wandering Weary" results in a crunchy and satisfying endnote. Debuts rarely come this assured-keep your eyes on this band.
