"dis-n-dat band"

Despite the literal connections, when Dis N Dat plays they are not a group of individuals—from the first roll of Rango’s snare drum the band grooves together as a single unit, demonstrating the kind of loose precision that make them one of the tightest live acts in Boston. When Dis N Dat plays the vibe is similar to the tribal party found at P-Funk shows. - wers.org

In the cover-band, lip-sync age we live in, there are loads of phonies. If you aren't careful, you can easily be duped. Nowhere is this truer then in the colorful word of reggae. Any peace-loving band with dreads can call itself reggae, but what you get is seldom the soulful roots of the Caribbean. That's why a band like Dis n Dat is so refreshing. The band's leader, Sista D, aka Debra Sarjeant, is the real deal. She has a semi-famous father, Denzil Botus,

"dis-n-dat band"

When Dis N Dat Band stopped by the WERS studio for a live performance on Rockers, they brought with them a night of good vibes, music, and family. In short, with three cuts off their new album, Black Sheep, Dis N Dat tore it up. Reggae is no stranger to reinvention: roots, ska, rock steady, dancehall—all of these styles have shone brightly in their own time, but now it might be time to clear a path for Dis N Dat Band and their new brand of what they call “Neo Reggae.”

The group was initially formed by the core husband/wife team of ex Black Uhuru drummer, Rango, and award-winning steel pan player and singer Sista D. Filled out by guitarist Laurie Goldsmith, the thick slabs of bass laid down by Tom Mansur, keyboardist Charles Sarjeant (Rango and Sista D’s son), percussionist Marcus, and the spitfire dancehall lyricisms of DJ/rapper Diamond Plus, Dis N Dat Band brings together musicians of all backgrounds to create a sound that is true progression in reggae music. “We get the classic roots from Rango,” says Sista D, “Laurie and Tom are American so they have R&B and the funk and I also have my Calypso roots; our music blends all these flavors together to produce a new sound in reggae, and that’s what we call ‘Neo Reggae.’”

It is this mixing of various musical styles that defines Dis N Dat Band. “That’s why we’re called Dis N Dat; you could put us in a dancehall party and we’ll just play dancehall, you could put us in a hip hop party, R&B party—we try to play like a DJ would mix. We want to please everyone in the crowd and please ourselves as well.”

The other defining characteristic of Dis N Dat Band is the sense that they are a true musical family. “That’s my favorite group, Parliament-Funkadelic,” say Sista D. “You know the kind of woman you always see at the shows with the big hat and the huge sunglasses—that’s me.” As far as Dis N Dat Band's reputation as a family affair, Sista D says it’s all true: “It just evolved into a family thing; everyone’s always at the house, we eat together, we do everything together. We are pretty much just a big family, everyone in the band.”

Having just dropped their debut record, Black Sheep, Dis N Dat Band is hitting the road to spread their gospel of Neo Reggae, converting audiences at every show they play. Do yourself a favor and catch a Dis N Dat show; it’ll be the most groovin’ night you’ll have until the next time they come around.
