A power trio based in San Francisco, California, Distance From Shelter taps the vein of 70’s hard rock, inhales deeply from the dense soundscapes of 80’s art-rock and exhales with the raw attitude and volume of hardcore/punk rock. Not too unlike bands such as Red Sparrowes, Mogwai, perhaps even Silversun Pickups... even so, they have their own unique sound, perhaps Black Flag mixed with Pink Floyd might be an apt comparison. The musicianship of the three members, with rock solid drumming and bass playing along with innovative guitar stylings is a cut above the rest. To see them perform live is something else, intensely energetic and absolutely mesmerizing.
The band, formed near the end of 2007 spent all of 2008 writing songs and honing their sound. They began playing live shows in the greater SF Bay Area during the summer of 2009. Their first live appearance was at the prestigious Uptown nightclub in Oakland, CA opening for all-female tribute band, TurbonegrA with Dolorata as main support. They are quickly building a strong following in their local area as well as on the internet, especially on numberonemusic.com.
Local music fans in the San Francisco area may remember Michael Bruce and Jodi Durst as members of 187CALM, a band who had a very loyal and respectful following in the SF Bay Area during the 1990's, as they stormed through the scene opening for bands such as Killing Joke, Neurosis, Monster Magnet, Kyuss, to name a few and also headlining packed venues. Distance From Shelter, though a relatively new band is a force to be reckoned with.
