""Decide" review"

- Good music in verses
- Good music in choruses
- Memorable "hook"
- Good sectional contrast
- Cohesive lyrics
- Lyrics communicate emotion to listener
- Vocals help to sell song
"The riffs move through the track creating a solid foundation. The guitar note progression that soars over the chorus brings in some good definition. With the instrumentation staying true to their initial sources and the bass/guitar sharing roles, thing scould potentially become to closely delivered for that contrast. You guys resuce the song from that by the guitar parts of the chorus. The middle lead continues that theme nicely and brings in a flexibility that also benefits the arrangement. The vocals add their passion and commitment to the package. The track fits nicely into any hard rock or metal listing. Consider bringing the music to video game outlets also. - Taxi

The Future Not So Distant For This Group

By J. B. Delatta

Although they are known as Distant Theory, this Lexington based band is made up of local talent and their chances at the big time are certainly anything but speculation.

Formed in the summer of 2007, the band is made up of three former members of ‘Sullen’, and two new members with extensive backgrounds in the local band scene. Given that they have been together for a relatively short time, their output has been as remarkable as the hard-charging and powerful guitar hooks that permeate their music. In less than eight months they have already emerged from of the studio with their debut endeavor, “Changes”, as well as producing two videos from the same CD.

The band has garnered a surprising amount of interest in short order with their initial effort. The CD, available at cdbaby.com, quickly captured the attention of Transfusion Entertainment; a promotion company based in Cincinnati, who immediately booked the band to open for Jackyl in March at Annie’s, a 1200 seat club in Cincinnati.

RCI Music Promotion of Nashville also signed on to promote the band by sending their CD to 200 radio stations all over the US and by placing the CD in stores. Taking advantage of local resources, the CD was recorded and produced at Weisenberger Studio in Georgetown, KY, while the videos for “Say We Are”, (youtube.com/distanttheory), and “Decide”, (myspace.com/distanttheory), were also shot in Central Kentucky. They are currently planning to release a third “live footage” video in the near future.

The band lists their influences as Tool and Breaking Benjamin, among others.

In a style reminiscent of Godsmack, their music carries a heavy-metal punch that is tempered ever so slightly by the pure vocals of lead singer Curtis Mullins, who is the band’s lyricist, but songwriting duties are a group effort with contributions from all the members.

Right from the opening chords of “What You Need” to the last track, “I’ll Write”, their power-duo, lead Darian Mason and rhythm David Fite, flex their guitar muscle with dominating licks, which grab you by the throat and command your attention with only a short span to catch your breath at the midpoint with the rock ballad, “Grey Sunrise”.

“World Behind” has a full, crushing sound that is remarkable for a five-piece band, and also contains one of the best hooks on the album.

The track “Touchstone” is instantly appealing and combines an infectious, in-your-face menace from the supporting vocals and a haunting guitar in the chorus that builds to a crescendo, (which left this listener scrambling for the remote to hit the repeat button.) This track is a possible breakout single from the CD.

There is a dark thread of edginess that seamlessly ties the album together, threatens to push you off the precipice, and then pulls you back only to laugh in your face and batter you again, but immersed in thrashing guitars and a pounding bottom end from bassist Chris Franklin and drummer Franklin Frye, the listener will be too engrossed to care. Like me, you’ll just want more. My advice? Listen loud, crank it up and hang on.

According to David, the CD is selling well and sales are expected to rise with their upcoming tour of the tri-state area. The band has two shows booked in Cincinnati, one in Frankfort and one in Lexington to date. He also stated that their fan base has grown steadily since the CD’s release.

Although all of the members of the band currently have solid careers, they have aspirations of breaking into the rock and roll world of bright lights and vast arenas, and given their obvious talent and prodigious output to date, the big time doesn’t seem so distant anymore.

Bio

After opening shows for the likes of Jackyl, Britny Fox and Days Of The New and upcoming mini-tours with Trust Company and Tragic Orange, Distant Theory is poised to make heads turn in the music world with their unique blend of powerhouse guitars and melodic hooks.
Recent winners of the Band Of The Month Contest by the heavy metal website fearshop.com, this band has come out of the gates with music that has a hard-charging sound and a take-no-prisoners attitude.
Distant Theory's debut CD, Changes, was released by MFI Records in December '07. The title was inspired by the myriad changes the members of the band have suffered, enjoyed and endured to reach the current stage of their musical careers. The band lists its influences as Godsmack, Breaking Benjamin and Tool, among many others.
Changes offers a groundbreaking, soul-wrenching sound that ranges from the all-out thrash of Decide to the haunting refrains of Grey Sunrise, a moving power ballad.
Distant Theory offers its audiences a mesmerizing, balls-out show and a rocking good time. Rest assured no one will leave a Distant Theory show disappointed. They deliver what they promise and then some. This is one band that leaves it all on the stage.
Distant Theory is in the studio working on there up and coming album EVOLVE. And are getting ready for there singel release ( SLIP THROUGH).
