"Album Review by: Evansville Courier & Press"

If you think a mix of U2, Pearl Jam and Echo and the Bunnymen sounds like reason to celebrate then you might want to give a listen to Dizzy Hollow, an Evansville band that incorporates sounds from each in its self-titled debut (available at Joe's Records in Evansville and as a digital download at iTunes and Amazon.com).

Album opener "Pillar" showcases the guitars of Brandon Long and Zach Ahrens, including a funky, effects-laden line that leads the song out.

Singer Roman Stonesypher shines on "The Little Death," which could pass for a lost Echo and the Bunnymen gem.

"Sink or Swim" is carried by the propulsive rhythm section of drummer Lucian Gatherwood and bassist (and album producer) Greg Pearce. Gatherwood's high-hat work and his time change during the fill are highlights.

The two-and-a-half minute pop nugget, "Cheshire Smile," which contains another good Stonesypher vocal and a subtle (if not too subtle) keyboard line near the end, bleeds into "Fountain," a more mellow song reminiscent of "Unforgettable Fire"/"Joshua Tree," era U2.

"Harlequin," starts out a little slow, but picks up with nice guitar work and System of A Down-like vocal chants, leading into a satisfying ending.

An almost spoken-word vocal (think Pearl Jam's "Push Me, Pull Me") dominates "Supercreep," which benefits by some great backing vocals.

Everything comes together on "Down the Leg," which has a good hook and an interesting backward guitar part in the middle. The melody sticks in your head long after the song is over.

The only tune that's tempting to skip is the plodding "Hotmilk" (although the last line will perk up your, um, ears).

If you're looking for Eddie Vedder or Ian McCulloch, Dizzy Hollow isn't them. But with songs reminiscent of each, it's a worthwhile mix in a local group, which is always worth lending an ear. - Evansville Courier & Press

Bio

The vibe rolls from one end of the spectrum to the other. Five eccentric personalities have come together to create a timeless brand of music that is often familiar yet always original and entertaining. Band members have coined the term "gutter pop" to describe some of their early tracks like 'Supercreep'.
Hypnotizing flavorful pulse provided by drummer Lucian Gatherwood & bassist Ryan Phillips. Guitarists Zach Ahrens & Brandon Long season the groove with powerful hum and delicate nuance. Roman Stonesypher delivers vocal melodies that weave through the music creating a fabric of raw intensity and emotional depth. These five oddities have not only broken the mold in their local scene, they have brought something much bigger to the table.  The 'Dizzy Hollow brand' of atypical, irresistible and ever evolving continues to make its mark wherever heard.
Dizzy Hollow is always writing and recording. The band looks forward to a more extensive touring schedule and the release of new material.
