"MORE THAN MONEY"

Getting ahold of DJ Earn Money is not necessarily difficult, but the man is truly on his music grind that includes a lot of traveling and studio time. After several calls and text messages we finally got him on the phone fresh off a gig in Whistler, Canada.

"My bad man when I do music, I don't even be looking at my phone." Earn Money explained.

Tip of the FLVR hat to this cat, the reason he has been successful in his career is example A: FOCUS.

Growing up in Chicago's South Side Hyde Park area DJ Earn Money was highly influenced by his grandfather when they lived in the Robert Taylor projects. His grandfather was a part time back up singer for the Chi Lights and ran a DIY (do it yourself) record shop out of their apartment. This is where Earn Money learned to earn money, no pun intended, because gramps showed him the technical recording skills needed to produce and create music as a DJ. Has a kid he would take a bunch of songs and mash them up on tapes and CD's and literally slang them in the neighborhood.

"It took me a while to realize I was actually making mixtapes," Earn Money explained. "But now these days people that consider themselves fans are more into my art. It is more than just music."

Outside of being one of Chicago's illest DJ's and producers, the graphic game and art world are big parts of DJ Earn Money's balance. He has spent time designing for several brands and projects while also doing music consulting on the side. He's not one of those guys that takes meaningless meetings, time is money and his grind is priceless.

The list of big name artists he has worked with is miles long from Wu Tang Clan to Wiz Khalifa and just about anybody that is somebody in the city of the Chi from Cool Kids to Roy French. Visit www.soundcloud.com/DJEarnMoney to hear some of the tunes while on Twitter and IG @DJEarnMoney is the ticket. For any booking considerations earneststreeter@gmail.com is the place to go, staying true to his name the kid earn's his money.

We sat down with DJ Earn Money before his Memorial Day show at Jerry’s in Wicker Park to get the details on where he’s going next.
Q&A – CUSP MAGAZINE & DJ EARN MONEY
CUSP Magazine: This may sound like a silly question, but do you go by Earn Money or Earnest in your day-to-day life?

Earn Money: It just depends on the person more than anything. Some people run up to me calling me Earn Money [and] some people run up calling me Earnest or Earn, but nowadays its more Earn Money than anything. That’s been one of my nicknames since I was probably like six or seven years old so it just transformed into a stage name.

CM: And how long have you been DJing?

EM: It’s going on ten years at this point.

CM: That’s a while.

EM: Yeah it’s been a minute, but I was introduced to it at a really early age, like when I got my nickname. My uncle used to DJ.

CM: What do you feel defines your personal style or brand?

EM: I don’t know, earning money more than anything. But my personal brand is a depiction of a lot of different things. I make a lot of my own art. It’s pretty much DIY, like part of my own brand. I’m really, really one for aesthetics and straight lines because I design outside of DJing.

CM: What kind of design do you do?

EM: I do graphic design but also clothing design.

CM: Do your pair the music with the design?DJ Earn Money - 01- CUSP Magazine Chicago

EM: It goes pretty much hand in hand. When I take a break from art and design to work on music and making beats I guess it’s like [there is] some part of my brain that makes me better at art and design when I come back to that. And then when I’m working on art and design it makes me better at music. It’s like hearing or seeing things that I stared at and I didn’t see.

CM: So being creative in one way influences the other?

EM: Yeah, it like adds on.

CM: What do you think you’re bringing to the Chicago music scene right now that is unique and needed?

EM: I would say diversity. I pretty much bring a mesh of eclectic people of all different races and backgrounds to normal events that I do. I try to infuse live performance art into my own personal events, just different things like that. It’s to give people something to experience, to walk away from, versus just being a party.

DJ Earn Money – “it’s a quest of mine to open Chicago’s eyes to being more diverse, less segregated in ways because … if I go to New York, if I go to L.A., it’s all types of kids partying together versus it being like oh, well this is hip-hop night here, this is reggae night”
CM: Is Chicago as a city important to what you do?

EM: It’s important because it’s a quest of mine to open Chicago’s eyes to being more diverse, less segregated in ways because … if I go to New York, if I go to L.A., it’s all types of kids partying together versus it being like oh, well this is hip-hop night here, this is reggae night … you’ll go to any club and you might hear some punk music, you might hear some reggae or it might be different levels with all punk music on this floor, hip-hop on this floor [and] reggae on this floor, and we don’t really have that here.

CM: What would you say is your biggest inspiration in either design or music?

EM: I would have to say Ralph Lauren because Ralph Lauren is all about lifestyle and that’s what I’m trying to create. It’s more than just like culture, more than just doing events or earning money. It’s an overall lifestyle, something that people can live by. It’s a code almost.

CM: What’s your favorite type of venue to play?DJ Earn Money05- CUSP Magazine Chicago

EM: I like lofts. I like loft parties, you know that have balconies. I like parties that are high up because we’ve got a lot of tall buildings. I like to throw really laid-back penthouse parties and stuff like that. I threw a wintertime pool party in January and it was pretty much like 70-80 people in a Jacuzzi partying for four hours.

CM: I feel like we’ve already addressed this a little, but what’s your ideal audience? I think it would just be a very diverse mix.

EM: Yeah, it would be a mix. Pretty much a mixture of everybody, a mixture of all different crowds. All different walks of life you know?

Surrounded by an intimate group of musicians and collaborators, all up-and-coming in the Chicago music scene, Earn Money is creating a new community in the city. With music as his medium, DJ Earn Money aims to unite the people of Chicago and ensure, of course, that everyone enjoys the party. - CUSP MAGAZINE
