DJ SPK Mixes It Up And Pulls It All Together

Not only is Apollonia Khan — known behind the decks as DJ SPK — a regular on the Charlotte and Atlanta music scenes, but she's also a promotions assistant and DJ at 92.7, a podcaster at StereoTypez Radio, and the 30-year-old mother of an eight-year-old child named Marley. CL sat down with this ubiquitous music maker around town to find out how she made her way to the turntables.
Creative Loafing: How did you choose your DJ name?
Apollonia Khan: SPK stands for Sour Patch Kid because of my personality. I am kind of an asshole, and it's really funny to me, but I am actually a really sweet person when you get to know me. More than one person has told me, while I was in my 20s, that I was a Sour Patch Kid. When I decided to become a DJ, Apollonia was already taken as a stage name. I decided to go with SPK because it embodies who I am.

In case you didn't know it, DJing is an art form. And Appollonia Khan, known as DJ SPK, has been putting in work on Charlotte stages and in nightclubs to make sure party-goers and concert attendees understand the intricacies of this art form. DJ is a open-format DJ based of our Charlotte/Atlanta specializing in House, EDM, Mashups/Remixes, Top 40, and Old School Hip Hop/R&B. She can provide clean music, as well. SPK DJs for 2 major FM stations (92.7 the Block & 105.3 R&B), and she also spins for 2 digital stations (the official FUBU Radio who has recently been signed to iHeart & Waxx FM both out of NYC/Brooklyn).

SPK has been the opening dj for major artists to include Mick Jenkins, Shwayze, St. Beauty, and more. DJ SPK is the Resident DJ for Killing Marshmallow Dreams at Petra's, Charlotte's PRIDE (Events, Festival VIP, & MainStage), RAW Artists at the Fillmore, Hip Hop Wednesday at Recess Charlotte, #ShapingCLT at the Levine Museum, #HellaCollab at Crown Station, and Crown Keepers events. She have also DJed regularly for Club One CLT, Camp Northend, Move Party ATL, Su Casa, FunkShun, & what was previously known as Dept. Store ATl.
