"ZAMBIA'S songbird Maureen Lupo Lilanda at Sauti Za busara"

ZAMBIA'S songbird Maureen Lupo Lilanda, last night, rocked music lovers with a thrilling performance during Sauti za Busara music concert staged at the Old Fort.

Singing alongside her daughter, Chileshe Mukuka, Maureen had the audience in the palm of their hands while they belted out their hits like Nartumela, Aniwone Nibani, Uchengele and Mumba.

The Zambia's singing diva mixed local and international flavours, with touches of Angelique Kidjo and Miriam Makeba. Assorted with her own flavours of Jazz and Afrofunk, she created an exciting blend that roused music fans.

After her enlivening performance, Maureen expressed his delight to be at the seventh Sauti za Busara music festival, saying the event presented her with lifetime opportunity to meet finest musicians from around the African continent.

Other artists who coloured the Busara concert on the night were Swahili Encounters, Malick Pathe Show from Senegal, Mari Boine from Norway, Joel Sebunjo and the Sundiate Band, Del and Diho from Mayotte and Ba Cissoko from Guinea.

Kenyan fêted artist Nyota Ndogo thrilled the audience as well with her hit songs Watu na Viatu, Mwana nitarudi, and Nibebe. Despite the lack of mains electricity since mid December, the seventh edition of Sauti za Busara music festival has lightened-up the spicy Islands.

Sauti za Busara kicked off on Thursday with a largest ever Carnival Parade with stilt-walkers, acrobats, mdundiko, ngoma dancers and brass band marching from Kariakoo to the Old Fort.

In this Valentine’s weekend the festivals offers many highlights as twelve of Zanzibar’s finest music groups and eight groups from mainland Tanzania will be performing alongside groups from Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, Mozambique, Mayotte, Egypt, Ethiopia, Guinea, Senegal, Gambia and Zambia.

The group was founded in Beira in 2001 by dancers
and musician from the big traditional music and dance group ”Companhia de música e dança traditional da Beira”.
They immediately won the young musicians festival “Music crossroads” and were nominated to participate in the regional festival the same year. They won several prizes, one were invited to visit the ethnicmusic festival in Sweden “Fallun”.
Their music reflects traditions from the central part of Mozambique and the specific marimba from that area called “Timbila” is heard on many of their songs. It must be considered as contemporary music with a strong
traditional touch.
Djaaka is a true live band, skilled musician and good dancers, all dresses down in real “African outfit’s very light clothing. Their live performance has impressed not only the Mozambican audience, it has brought them to
Festivals at La Reunion, Mauritius, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Italy and United Kingdom. They have won the “ Best Mozambican band” award three times at TOP-Ngoma, held by Radio Mozambique.
