"METAL HAMMER review"

"Imagine Tool hooked on a funk rock beat. Or Fugazi getting drunk on Rage Against The Machine's philosophy. Somehow Djevara manage to make all of this sound cohesive, agitating, DIY and musically confident. An exciting album of blazing, streetwise British promise." - METAL HAMMER

"KERRANG! Review"

"APOPLECTIC LONDON QUARTET POINT THE FINGER...

You can only salute the tenacity of Djevera*. This second album is released through their own label and they're involved in various righteous political campaigns and DIY promotions. And as a black-fronted metal band, they're still a rarity. Their music is strong too, melding At The Drive-In/Fugazi-inspired anger with good old hyper-metal riffage. Songs like "The Consumer" and "600 Years Of Your Civilization And My People Still Live In Poverty" are so eyeball-poppingly angry you can't help but be swept along. It's a combination that shows the underground has a big beating heart."

"SUBBA CULTCHA review"

The UK’s true Underground heroes make an album that deserves to be heard by everyone, now!

Since the demise of Rage Against The Machine there seems to have been a lack of bands who have been as angry or as politically motivated as R.A.T.M particularly from the UK, and shouting about the problems in the third world. However London 4 piece Djevara seem to be as angry and politically motivated if not more so than R.A.T.M, especially on their new album ‘Third World War: Cast The First Stone’ their follow up to their acclaimed 2004 debut ‘God Is White.’ This album looks like it could be similarly acclaimed. Also in an era of cleverly and cynically marketed promotion campaigns, ploys, and tricks such as bands slagging of bands, going to rehab, or appearing on Big Brother or one of the never ending reality tv shows that seem to be showing at any given time, Djevara have taken an honest and raw approach of reaching the true music fan, they’re more concerned getting their music and message across, rather than concerned about shifting units. Djevara want to make the music that they want to make rather than following whats fashionable or the commercial thing to do, or being told what to sound like by some soulless and soul crushing record company executive.

In the press release Zebediah Bassey briefly explains lead singer Usuyak Bassey’s aka Bass’ vision for ‘Third World War: Cast The First Stone’, he says that this is ‘an expanded personal reflection of life as perceived from an African Briton in the 21st century, having spent three years in Zimbabwe watching the home of his (our) ancestors disintegrate and then returning to an indifferent West.’

This is clearly an emotional and complex record, and clearly shows Bass’ anger and contempt at the Western world governments ignorance and worse rhetoric towards the plight and the poverty taking place in the third world, and particularly in Zimbabwe, and it shows the battle that the third world has on its hands, particularly to get help from the west hence the title of the record.

The record starts with ‘Third World War’ which with its tribal screams and drums is a terrifying and terrific start, and is the aural equivalent of someone being murdered(!), possibly Tony Blair(!!), and is fucking fantastic(!!!). From then on in its hardcore, and hard edged roots and rock all the way baby, and is the name of the game on this record.

With song titles such as the snappily titled ‘Six Hundred Years Of Your Civilization And My People Still Live In Poverty’, ‘The Death Of Cliff Richard) (which should be more than enough to put an evil grin on any discerning rock fan), ‘Third World War’, and ‘The Consumer’ where Bass demands ‘Hey consumer by my product’ throughout the track.

Although the album has an unrelenting and almost impenetrable concrete and armour plated and rough as fuck metal sound, through the hardcore riffage there are some surprisingly hooky tunes. The songs heaviness just consume you in genuinely crushing way and they very rarely let go. Djevara have taken the mentalness of Sepultura and the political lyrics of Zack De La Rocha, as well as some of the scratching guitar sounds of R.A.T.M mixed it up into an awe-inspiring whole. - SUBBA CULTCHA

Bio

Djevara* is an independent rock band based in London, England.

PUNK IS NOT A SOUND - Djevara play a kind of music termed "post-Alles" by fans, "...a visceral and heady mixture of punk rock, crossover alternative metal, post-hardcore, spoken word/urban hip-hop, ambient experimental noise and progressive rock"

Having grown up under the influence of the DIY alternative/punk scenes of the early 80s/90s expoused by bands such as Fugazi, the band have tried to live the philosophy right from the beginning: as a result set up their own label, festivals, shows, art-spaces and tours and continue in their quest to find freedom of expression through music and related artforms.
