"The trials and tribulations of a Maritime DJ"

DJs have gotten a lot of attention in the last couple of years. Their popularity has been ever rising and they have easily become some of the most dominant acts in the music industry. However, it seems these DJs come out of nowhere and suddenly they are on top of the charts. The Argosy sat down with Dj FRD, a local up and coming DJ, and spoke about the challenges and rewards of entering the DJing world. Dj FRD first became interested in electronic music while playing Bantam hockey. "Back then it was all about using the music to get pumped and focused for the game." says FRD. This eventually translated into making playlists, mashups, and working on originals. Last February he bought a controller and began the learning curve.
Since then FRD has been honing his skills, playing at house parties and working with other Maritime DJs such as Inspektor Dex, who recently played Thalloween here at Mt. A.
FRD also tells The Argosy his influences include Like Mike & Dmitri Vegas, Mike Morales, Dave Edwards, and the legendary Daft Punk, which have an influence on his sound which was described as "top 40s/house" but is ever expanding. "It has been a learning process for sure, but I have been able to integrate other genres such as hip-hop and trap into my sets." Last Friday FRD had his Sackville debut, playing at Uncle Larry's. Along with this new found residency, he has played events in Moncton, and is working on expanding to St. FX and Halifax. FRD and Inspektor Dex will be performing at Uncle Larry's as part of the Movember Pub Crawl on November 17. If you want a taste of FRD's mixes before then, you can check out his Sound Cloud at http://soundcloud.com/djFRD.
