College provides edgy vibe

College Street Bar

574 College St.

416-533-2417

Ambience: College Street Bar is an intimate restaurant and lounge in the heart of one of the city’s funkiest areas. The brick walls and post-jazz age artwork contribute to a warm atmosphere that caters to diverse tastes. Once the dinner tables are tucked away, the music is turned up and the transformation from bar/ restaurant to nightspot happens. With live bands on Sunday (funk and R&B) and live Latin music starting April 18, along with DJ Goldfinger spinning on Friday and Saturday, College Street Bar maintains the cutting edge vibe that’s come to define the neighbourhood.

Crowd: A lot of 20 and 30-something professionals. The clientele varies from those looking to drink and have a wild night to couples sharing a bottle of wine and chatting. The diversity makes for an interesting evening.

Dress code: All styles are welcome, but to fit in think funky casual. Everything from suits to jeans work, but looking like a slob will only get you questioning looks.

Should I dance on the bar?: Sadly, no. The back of the bar is cleared for dancing at night.

Best accessory: A broad taste in music.

Will I get lucky?: You might, but you probably want to take a much more subtle approach. The Doug and Steve Butabi grind and pick-up moves will not suffice.

Cocktail du jour: The beverage of choice varies depending on the night, but the extensive wine and martini menu is always popular. Premium draft and pitchers also do well, along with mixed drinks on Friday and Saturday night.

Hours: Every day, 5 p.m. until close.

Bio

Dj Goldfinger grew up in a 'jazzhouse'. In the 80s he was into classic rock. When the 90s came around he got into playing the saxophone and Dj'ing. Since 1999, he has been the goto DJ for many looking for a jazzy funky sound fused with modern beats.
For the past 8 years he has held the number 1 jazz program at www.CIUT.FM called 'What is HiP Radio see www.myspace.com/whatishipradio.
He has had the pleasure of interviewing some of the worlds top Acid Jazz people such as Medeski Martin & Wood, Roy Ayers, WEldon Irvine, etc...

Now he has combined Dj'ing with live performance and the result is a hot "live off the floor electro-jam".

He has Dj'd most major venues in Toronto including several high-end fashion shows and many world class venues in Manhattan.

Most recently DjGoldfinger has been working in Manhattan, The Hamptons, Boston and Connecticut as Music Director and Dj for a series of Fashion shows and corporate events for Veuve Cliquot, Hennessy, Belvedere and 10Cane Rum.
