DJ G-String, 21 now, began at age 14 playing with songs on the radio by recording them and trying to match the beats with other songs. She would blend the songs together with cassette tapes. “I started mixing when I was 14 years old with cassette tapes, but I bought my equipment when I was 18 and I started the club scene when I was 19 at a club called The Scene in Chicago,” said G-String. For the techies out there trying to get started, DJ G-String owns CD players by Numark cdn-88, an Alesis sound-effect device, plus a Behringer mixer and headphones. She also owns a keyboard, guitar, Reason 2.5 production program, Cubasis SX, Acid Pro 3.0, Stageworks sound system, two computers, and tons more. “I own my own equipment. I did buy everything myself and it was a huge risk to invest in,” she said.
But a risk worth taking because DJ G-String is on her way up. Watching her in the booth is amazing as she moves with the music, full of energy. But what she spins is unique, from Euro, Progressive, Trance, Techno, Jungle House, Old School, and Top 40. “At Royal I specialize in Euro, Progressive, House, and Top 40,” said G-String.

DJ G-String is also a student at Columbia College Chicago where she is a double major in Writing for Television and Broadcast Journalism. “That is my educational future, but what I would love to do is to be like DJ Sammy or DJ Encore. I want to produce my own music and sing to it, I have currently made a track or two which when my next CD comes out there will be only my music on that. I want to be a well-known DJ worldwide.”

DJ G-String is a resident DJ at the Royal Club every Thursday night and just recently took a step into the big-time with a resident position with Chix Mix Productions who throw two monthly women’s parties at Circuit Nightclub. But back to the under-21 scene—DJ G-String says, “GLBT youth definitely come and jam out to the tunes. It is a very relaxed enjoyable environment. I like that I can rock out a place and watch people have fun dancing to the music I spin. I also love it when I can mix a song that I never heard nor mixed before and do an awesome job.”

If any of you wants to be a DJ or you are thinking about being one, here are words of advice from DJ G-String. “Being a DJ is an expensive hobby so save, work hard, and if you’re serious and it is something you want to do, don’t give up.”
