Bio

History and Concept
As a child, she used to say she wanted to be a DJ. She always knew she had groove in her soul. The girl from Rio de Janeiro grew up listening to soul, funk, jazz, classical music, 60’s soundtracks, 70’s disco music and samba, the music which can always be heard coming from the open windows of Brazilian cities.
Her career started as a journalist and music critic for magazines and news agencies, but in 1995 it was time for something new. She arrived in Berlin, her current home, with a suitcase full of records. Soon she started DJing in different clubs and events in and around the city. The Brazilian parties were, at the time, a bit straight and dated, limited to samba hits and axé-music, with poor and sexist lyrics. Marie L. worked to show her audience the different “countries” inside the big country called Brazil, teaching the latest trends and fighting against those Brazilian music stereotypes.

Cultural and Plural
Living in such a multicultural city as Berlin opened her ears to new music from all over the world that were promptly included in her sets. In a short time, she became known in the Brazilian and world beat underground scene for being both a versatile DJ on the cutting edge of the trends and an artist with a strong knowledge of music.

DJ, musician and journalist
Besides being a DJ, Marie L. is also a drummer and a percussionist. She played the drums in the legendary band “Shottas” (former Xotas Mortais, with bassist Sandra Coutinho). One can also see her in her concerts with DJ Ipek’s oriental-house project Akasha Crew, as a singer and percussionist in the drums & voices band Rainhas do Norte, directed by Neide Alves (former Maracatu Nação Estrela Brilhante, from Recife/Brazil), and traveling the world with New York/Berlin performer Dahlia.
She is also a music critic and researcher who collaborates regularly with the Brazilian magazine Brazine.
