The best kept secret in music

East Coast DJ like local scene
By John Benson

Brian Henaulc is known as DJ Massacre because he regularly kills audiences with his tight beats and hardcore rap. During the past year, the Worcester, Mass., native has found much love on the North Coast. He returns Sept. 1 for a DJ gig at The Underground.

“I was there in January and it was fun,” Henaulc said. “There weren’t many people because it was wintertime, but what are you going to do? It was still fun. I have to say I like Sandusky. It’s the club itself. The people who own the venue, they’re probably one of the coolest club owners. It just makes the whole thing that much better.

“And I’ll tell you what — people in Sandusky, they’re always real cool.”

There you go — love is in the air whenever DJ Massacre is in Erie County.

The Boston Red Sox fan has been busy of late. Not only does he DJ for East Coast acts Realsick, Mk & Syckflo and Dr Gigglez, but he produces and sells monthly mixtapes which he calls the “Bump This Shhh” series.

The CDs (he’s currently pushing No. 11) feature some of the best underground artists in the states.

“It’s pretty much all rap,” Henaulc said. “There’s some rock here and there, but it’s mostly underground rap. I like underground rap better because the mainstream people already have it all, so they don’t really care what their music sounds like. But you get the underground people who want to make money, they make good songs.”

Up next for DJ Massacre is his full-length debut, which he hopes to put out next summer.

“It’s in the works,” Henaulc said. “It just always gets pushed back if you get a show booked or something else, but I definitely want to do a full album with people rapping on every beat.”

He mentions influences such as Twiztid and Insane Clown Posse; however, there appears to be more going on than just the alternative underground vibe.

“It’s really hardcore,” Henaulc said. “It’s not really radio friendly or club friendly. A lot of the music makes you angry.”

As for his upcoming gig at The Underground, DJ Massacre will be playing tunes old-school DJ style for the March of Dimes Hip-Hop Charity Event fundraiser.

He has this message for Sandusky:

“I’ll be spinning stuff that keeps people moving and dancing and having fun,” Henaulc said. “I’m going to play anything and everything. If you want to hear something, come down and let me know — I’ll play it.”
