A fresh new club sound: The underground of the world !

Hailing from Berlin to Barcelona and back, DJ Mohak is always on the lookout for fresh new tunes, new experiences and new influences in combination with roots from South, East, West and North. Her sets are defined by an eclectic-electronic sound with global roots, varying from Asian Underground, Balkanesque Speed Beats, Latin Boogie Breaks, Samba Boss Sounds, Afrobeatnik, Future Flamenquillo, Rumba Turca Bass, Global Dubstyle to Eastender Reggae.

Since her early childhood in the Ex-Socialist part of Berlin she has always been in close contact with music. Her parents drag her out to Eastern European and South American parties and festivals and the sound slowly infiltrated her soul. As a teenager she naturally spent most of her time on concerts of any style going from Punk to Dancehall, from Ska to Drum'n'Bass or from Rock'n'Roll to Jazz and started working on festivals and concerts.

In 1998 she left her home town Berlin to spend two years in Brussels, collecting frenchy sounds. When she returned to Berlin, a new Hispanic fusion mix from Barcelona called Mestizo became the hottest insider tip ever and several underground parties started to pop up. Mohak and her friends jumped on the occasion and created the very first website about Ska, Punk and Mestizo - Voice Of Culture. A print magazin, a radio show on the public channel OKB Berlin and a series of concerts and parties, where Mohak and her collegues started to spin global fusion sounds, followed.

In 2003 however, she decided to move to Barcelona herself to focus on the movement around Manu Chao, Macaco and Ojos de Brujo and to get as many fresh tunes from this new urban immigrant sound as possible. Soon a radioshow on dostreceradio.net and www.riereta.org were set up, where she ran her own Worldbeats Show.

Currently she is living in Berlin and Barcelona, working on a compilation for a new Spanish Magazin about Underground World Music called Moviment, in which she also collaborates with interviews and articles. Apart from that Mohak works as a freelance journalist and spins her music frequently in Barcelona at parties such as Canibal Sound System and Brazelona Sessions hosted by the Brazilian musician Wagner Pa, and in Berlin at Terrabeats, Fiesta Berlin and at the new Hispanic-German Party and Festival Espantapitas / Mo*Vida at the famous Sage Club.

Her sound creates a bridge between South and East, North and West, between traditional roots sounds and contemporary influences, between Spain and Germany and Latinamerica and Eastern Europe. Mohak has a feeling for what she does: She skillfully combines electronic club tunes and rough edge urban underground sounds with danceable melodies and steady beats from different cities like New York, London, Sao Paolo, Tel Aviv, Budapest, Barcelona and Berlin, and by doing so creates her very own unique and energetic sound, that nobody can resist without dancing.

In the end, it's all about the energy. And that's what it is: Global Rock'n'Roll!
