Bio

D Jones is not the average MC. Born and raised in Youngstown, OH, D Jones faced the trappings of a poor, urban environment but went against the grain to have a more optimistic outlook on opportunities. Therefore, when he focused on the opportunity to write rhymes and spit, he decided that it would be unwise to take on the rough and tough street gangster persona prevalent in today’s well known artists. Instead he would take his experiences of life in the hood and talk frankly about society’s conditions. With the “freedom” of no major label backing, D Jones can basically say anything he wants so instead of pandering to the industry and its gimmicks, he makes the music he wants to hear.

“My style is not something I’m into defining. I’m influenced by 360 degrees of perspective. On one hand, I can have the aggression of the rapper from the streets mixed with the passion of a leader trying to inspire a movement. The industry’s not doing enough, the government isn’t doing enough, the people aren’t doing enough. Myself included.”

D Jones has been writing since 1989, recording/performing since 1997.

“Grown folks music. That’s what I call it. I’m 30 years old. I’m working on my third college degree. I’m working on my 8th cd. I’ve written 4 books of poetry. I’ve traveled more places than most of my friends and family combined. A corner or club is the last thing I need to be talking about.”

These days D Jones has been more aggressively scheduling performances, working hard to be heard and deliver a different message to the people.

“For years I’ve been on honing my craft, performing live, making music and handing it out. Its time to go beyond just a love of the music and present myself to a larger audience. I believe in myself and I have fans who believe in me too.”

“I love shows. To get a crowd moving, listening to your words. I’ve played the house party living room to 4,000 opening for a Ludacris show. Nothing moves like a crowd."

These days D Jones also teaches courses in Film and and is an award winning filmmaker recently returning from the 2009 Cannes Film Festival in France.
