DJ Spair

Versatility is a necessity for a DJ these days, and few DJs are as versatile as Las Vegas-based DJ Spair. He is equally adept at rocking big-ticket mainstream venues as he is grimy underground spots. Virally, his remixes have garnered hundreds of thousands of plays.

Spair is also the inventor of a unique scratch technique called the Spair Flare, which blew away the legendary turntablist DJ Q-Bert and earned a spot in Q’s renowned Skratchlopedia. Spair hails from Oakland, California, and is the son of a jazz musician. His father — and his father’s passion for music — played a huge role on Spair’s development, first as a music lover and later as an artist himself. With the influence of his father combined with prodigious natural talent, Spair was able to stand out even in the DJ-saturated Bay Area scene.

In 1999 he started the legendary Oakland Faders crew with fellow artist DJ Platurn and that same year won URB magazine’s mixtape competition, solidifying himself as a force to be reckoned with. Spair’s talents were recognized by Red Bull, and in 2003 he was invited to South Africa to participate in the exclusive Red Bull Music Academy. Later, in 2004, Spair and Platurn went on to win the much-publicized Scion Free Up Your Mix competition, topping DJs from all over the nation with their smooth mixing, deep crates, and nimble scratching.

On stage, Spair has DJed for artists like Warren G, Doug E. Fresh, and even Bobby Brown. He has opened for DJ luminaries like Mix Master Mike, Pete Rock, and A-Trak. His ability to genre-hop amongst hip-hop, rock, Top 40, funk, and dance music, combined with impressive technique, keeps him in heavy demand.

Since his move to Las Vegas in 2008 he has maintained residencies and played at some of the hottest clubs on the strip, including the Encore Beach Club, Blush, ROK Vegas and Voodoo Lounge all while maintaining his Bay Area ties by holding down Eargasm, a monthly party, with fellow Oakland Fader DJ Mere.

Also an accomplished producer, Spair has crafted fan-favorite tracks for artists like Zion I and Mistah FAB. He is presently hard at work on his first solo album, which he promises to be a reflection of both his DJ sets and his production talent: A multifaceted meshing of multiple genres, all put together with a keen ear for detail.

Spair came up in a school of DJing whose biggest lesson was that a DJ should be able to do it all –mix, scratch, blend, produce, make high-quality mixtapes, comfortably play many musical genres, and be able to win over the crowd in almost any club environment.
