VEX - ELECTRO EP VOL. 1
I've never met Windsor's Royce Grayer -- who counts Vex as one of his alter egos -- but this 8-track disc conjures up the image of a mad scientist cackling over his mixer, staying up all hours of the night to perfect his tracks. What we have here is a sinister slab of purely instrumental electroclash: All booty-shaking retro '80s beats and rumbly synthesizers. Imagine if Kraftwerk were the house band at a strip club. Or if Daft Punk weren't so goofy. This stuff might be too hip for Windsor. I don't know how many French Touch fans are 'round these parts. If there were any justice, there'd be crowds of dancers in the latest New Wave fashions following Vex around and gettin' down to his creations.

Rollz Royze - Self Destruction
Some of you may recognize this album's cover art from Frank Miller's Sin City graphic novels. Cool, huh? The music's pretty cool, too. Rollz Royze is another alter-ego of Windsor producer/playa Royce Grayer. Instead of the electro attack of Grayer's work as Vex, Rollz Royze is more about chilled-out, atmospheric downtempo beats. Lots of space, subtlety and restraint on these all-instrumental tracks. Fits comfortably in the genre of hypnotic production populated by the likes of Pelican City and Fat Jon. There are folks who will find this disc dull because of the lack of any singing, rhyming or repeatable choruses. Patience is required to get into it, no doubt. But this stuff is dope in my book.
