During the Bird and Diz celebration with Columbus Jazz Orchestra the guest artist line up was stellar, but one of tonight's takers on the program was trumpeter Doug Pierce. Whose slick fluid phrases on the bop standard properly titled "Be-Bop" were quite arrousing. It was quite apparent when even the legendary trumpeter Claudio Roditi who was the feature for the evening turned to pay attention to what was coming out of Doug's horn. What sealed the deal was the audience's thunderous applause afterwards - The Other Paper by Lee Brown

D. Lee Pierce is an incredibly gifted composer, arranger and orchestrator. He hails from Detroit Michigan. In 1995 Doug moved to Washington DC and completed his undergraduate studies in Jazz Studies and Composition at the University of DC and later in 2002 went on to pursue graduate studies in Jazz Performance at Western Michigan University. During Doug's undergraduate and graduate studies Doug was awarded various composers' residencies including the illustrious Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Program in April of 2004. Currently Doug teaches Jazz Composition and Jazz Trumpet at The Ohio State University while he continues to be an active clinician, guest composer and performer.
