"Live Review"

“The connection between the two of them while performing is visceral and intense but in a way they focuses your attention on the skill and harmonies they create. I even learned a bit of Celtic Harp history, the trick of placing a 10 shilling note between the strings to help create the thrumming chorded harmonies in a tune I swiftly forgot the name of. But all in all, their set was quite easy to lose yourself in.” - Timber and Steel Online Blog

Bio

Mother and daughter duo Delyth and Angharad Jenkins came together by popular demand, after being asked to play at various festivals, clubs and arts centres across south Wales. With both of them having independent musical careers, it was other people who pointed out to them that this indeed was a rather special combo.

Delyth was brought up on the border between Wales and England, with her family roots firmly fixed in Montgomeryshire, whilst living just over the border in Shropshire. She came to south Wales to go to university, and there she stayed, and it was there that her two daughters were born.
She only took up the harp in her early twenties, but since then she has come to be regarded as “one of the leading exponents of the Celtic harp.” (Dirty Linen)
She started her career with the Swansea-bases folk group Cromlech, and then moved on to be one of the founding members of the pioneering instrumental trio Aberjaber, a group that cherished the traditions of Wales whilst at the same time moving that tradition forward in new and exciting ways.
Delyth also has a well-established solo career. Her latest project has been a concert tour round some of Wales’s 100 best churches.

Angharad was more or less born to the sound of music. In the months before she was born, Delyth was busy touring with Aberjaber, and so the bump that was to be Angharad was quite literally a prop for the harp.
Although encouraged to take up musical instruments, Delyth never forced Angharad to play folk music. However, when Angharad was 16, Delyth noticed that trac, the folk development organisation for Wales, were advertising for young musicians from Wales to go to the Falun Folk Festival in Sweden, and suggested to Angharad that she might like to go. It turned out to be a life-changing experience for Angharad, opening up to her all the buzz and excitement that is to he had from a bunch of musicians playing traditional music together.
It was on this trip that the seeds of Calan were sown. Since then Calan has gone on to take on Wales and many other countries by storm. They have succeeded in putting Welsh folk music firmly on the map, and without doubt one of the high points so far has been winning first prize in the folk group competition at the 2010 Interceltic Festival in Lorient.
They have received rave reviews wherever they go: "...there’s nowt as dear as folk – especially when played with the grace, daring and sheer joy this multi-instrumental five-piece bring to a winning selection of reels, jigs and hornpipes." (Daily Mirror)
