Doc & Ryan
Biography

When you blend jazz, with hip-hop, R&B and Rock, you have the latest blend of head-bobbing music by Doc & Ryan. Formed in 2008, this Los Angeles-based duo consists of cellist Doc Allison and drummer, Ryan Jefferson. The fusion of their respective instruments, laced with melodic rhymes, is unique to the genre of Alternative Hip Hop.

Doc Allison, the group’s front man, vocalist and cellist, has been making music since third grade at his Baldwin Hills, CA elementary school. Following in the steps of his musician father, Doc also plays guitar, bass guitar and piano. He perfected his skills throughout the years in public school bands and orchestras.

Ryan Jefferson, also a Los Angeles native, has been drumming since the age of six. Inspired by his father, a bass player, Ryan would accompany him at gigs and rehearsals, begging to join him at clubs when he was well below the drinking age! What started out as a hobby, became a passion as he continued to play from elementary through high school in performing arts orchestras and marching bands.

Small talk while working as summer camp counselors led to an impromptu jam session over the phone, thus creating Doc & Ryan. Doc recalls, “When we played together it just made my music sound very complete… it was inevitable that we would be considered a band.”

Together the two form a group unlike any in the music industry. Music enthusiasts of all genres enjoy their live performances of audience favorites “Know What I’m Sayin’” and “Reach Beyond.” Doc & Ryan perform to packed crowds at the Key Club, Aqua Lounge, The Terrance and local colleges and universities. Their lyrics are written by Doc and produced by both Doc and Ryan.

Doc & Ryan’s musical inspiration comes from such artists as The Roots, Marvin Gaye, The Rolling Stones, N*E*R*D, Miles Davis and Earth, Wind and Fire. As background musicians, they are honored to have played with Fernando Harkles of WAR, Alfred Jackson of the Ray Charles Orchestra and Jill Scott.

Doc described the future of Doc & Ryan as “bigger than life. The masses are looking for real music again. People desire something fresh, positive and real.”

Doc & Ryan are in the studio recording new music as they continue to tour Los Angeles venues.
