One of my favorite CMA Music Festival moments was meeting Doc Wooten on the bus used as Johnny Cash's road warrior in the movie Walk the Line, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny and Reese Witherspoon as June Carter Cash. The cast also includes Johnny's son, John Carter Cash (see our cover story on page 20), and Waylon Jennings' son, Shooter Jenings. Just before I met Doc, who was helping display the bus, I'd listened to his new Toeing the Lins CD. With such a great voice, it's no wonder he's opened for Ricky Van Shelton and others. I also got to meet the bus' owner, Arly Winsler, who allowed the movie's production company to "retro" his 1976 GMC motorcoach with a 1950's interior. Singer/Songwriter Doc Wooten is traveling the country with the bus retro-styled as Johhny Cash's bus in the Walk the Line movie, due out Nov. 18. And when Doc played August's Rockabilly Fest in Jackson, Tenn., The Tennessee Three -- Johnny's band for 40 years -- was performing. "I had a blast sharing the stage with them," declares Doc. "If you closed your eyes, you wou;ld've thought Johnny wasa in the house. With favorites like 'Folsom Prison Blues' and 'I Walk the Line,' you couldn't help but reflect on the impact Johnny had on music. After the show, the Three -- WS Holland, Bob Wootton ad Rayburn Anthony -- and I climbed on the bus, where they recounted stories of life on the road with Johnny. —Doc showcased on Tuesday at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge. The title tune to his CD is a countrified remake of Rocky Burnette’s 1980 rock hit (correct title: “Tired of Toein’ the Line”). Lots of steel and percussion back his pleading tenor lead. Promising. Some of you might remember this guy as the “host” of the Johnny Cash tour bus at last summer’s CMA Music Fest.

To Benefit World Hunger Year Organization
With the “Country in New York” events in full swing and the premiere of “Walk The Line” -- the Johnny Cash film, Johnny’s original band, The Tennessee Three (TN3) have organized a “country review” recreating “the show Johnny and June Carter did in concert and on TV”. The live show will also feature: rising country singer/songwriter Carly Goodwin, ‘newcomer’ Doc Wooten, G. Bush and singer/songwriter/guitar guru Eddie Bush for one night only at The Rodeo Bar on 27th Street and Third Avenue, Tuesday, November 15th (immediately after the CMA Awards at MSG).
Bob Wootton and W. S. Holland (of TN3) maintained a 30-year plus relationship with Johnny Cash and they were thrilled to be invited to attend the upcoming NYC film premiere of “Walk The Line” on the 13th of November. Carly Goodwin, who was recently introduced to the Tennessee Three, mentioned how she would like to do something in association with their visit to NYC and the CMA Awards. They put “their respective talents” together and decided to offer a “free show” in New York immediately after the CMAs. The “free show” is one way for TN3 to thank their fans and offer “a personal concert legacy” to the man in black -- Johnny (and June Carter) Cash.
Additionally, a portion of the proceeds of all the CD sales for the night will be donated to World Hunger Year as part of their “Artists Against Hunger and Poverty” program. This one-night-only country review will also feature special guests: Carly Goodwin, Doc Wooten, G.Bush and Eddie Bush, who will kickoff the show at 10PM.
Carly Goodwin has certainly made a name for herself in Country music: the release of her debut CD featuring a duet with Willie Nelson on his classic “Crazy”, the Nashville launch of the “Baby Come Back Home Soldiers’ Scrolls” and her work with families of our military overseas (please sign online – see attached “scroll site” information).
Doc Wooten from Memphis performed with TN3 at the Jackson, TN. “Rockabilly Fest” this summer and his remake of “Toeing The Line” was released earlier this year. He was recently featured in Country Weekly regarding performing with TN3 and how he brought the “Walk The Line” bus in Nashville’s “CMA Musicfest” in June.
Eddie Bush has built a strong following as an in-demand live performer known for his eclectic set lists, charismatic stage presence and virtuoso guitar licks. He started his singer/songwriting journey back in 2001 when he wrote the moving anthem, “Spirit of America” one week after the tragedy of 9/11. The song eventually got airplay in markets all over the country, including The Howard Stern Show. Based on the success of “Spirit of America,” Charleston’s local police asked Eddie to write a song for them. He was invited to perform that song, “The Thin Blue Line,” at The National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial in Washington, DC in front of President Bush and 30,000 police officers. In the fall of 2004, Eddie Bush signed with Tone-Box Records and released his debut self-titled album in March 2005.
Combining The Tennessee Three (by-the-way, there are 6 members total), Carly, the Doc, G.Bush and Eddie Bush into a “country review” promises to be a real New York night to remember. Also, Johnny Cash’s black Fender guitar and chair will be onstage in memoriam.
The Rodeo Bar, NYC’s own southern roadhouse, has a limited capacity and admission to the “free show” will be handled on a first come, first serve basis.
The Rodeo Bar originally opened in 1987 and is the only “Country club” in the city. On the night of November 15th, the CMA Awards will be broadcast live inside the club, (located near 27th St. -- 375 Third Avenue -- 212/683-6500) to add to the night’s country theme and celebration.
Through WHY’s “Artists Against Hunger and Poverty” program, dedicated artist-citizens raise awareness and more than $7 million for over 500 anti-poverty organizations around the US. Each artist has given considerably to community-based organizations in WHY’s “Reinvesting In America” network. These organizations address the underlying causes of hunger and poverty by providing education, life skills, job training, community economic development, health care, child care, housing, transportation, among other services, to their clients and communities in need. Country Singer Doc Wooten shares how he went from a career as a chiropractor to his present life as a successful country singer. The look in his eyes tell us it was the right decision.
Doc recently performed with Tennessee Three at the Rock-A-Billy Fest, where Fans are treated to performances by the legends of Rockabilly music as well as young Rockabilly performers.

Producer Robert A. Johnson chose Memphis' Ardent Studios to record a special Christmas EP entitled Christmas Bells and Kitchen Smells, featuring Johnny Cash's original drummer, Fluke Holland, as well as Doc Wooten, guitarist Bob Wootten, bassist Lisa Horngren, and Cash's brother Tommy Cash.
The EP features "That Christmas Feeling" (written by Johnny and Tommy Cash, from the 1979 album A Cash Family Christmas), "Christmas Train" (written by producer Robert A. Johnson and Jimmy Davis, in honor of Johnny Cash), and "Christmas Eve in Tennessee," (written by Larry Holden, editor-in-chief of Country Weekly Magazine).

DOC WOOTEN BIO
Indiana native Doc Wooten loves to make music. While he was born in Indianapolis, most of his youth was spent in Ohio where he discovered country radio in the form of WWVA out of Wheeling, West Virginia. And he listened to that radio power house every moment he could savoring the pure country sound from the neighboring state.
From childhood, Doc sang. Most of his performing was in churches in the Ohio area. Thanks to his mother who encouraged him, he always had a guitar in his hands during those performances. Throughout his school years, Doc continued to play even until he graduated from Palmer University of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa.
Along the way, Doc moved to Memphis where he met Sam the Sham, formerly of Sam the Sham and the Pharos. Sam encouraged Doc to write songs, a passion he now persistently pursues. Docs first recording session was in Sams studio in Memphis.
From his first taste of recording in Memphis, Doc eventually landed in Nashville with keyboard player and producer Mark Olivarius where he recorded several songs. Later, he discovered keyboard player and producer Mike Schrimpf formerly with Conway Twitty. Doc recorded several more songs with Mike. In his continuing pursuit to get his material heard on country radio, Doc recorded his sophomore CD at studio 19 in Nashville. Produced by Robert Johnson and Larry Rogers, the CD was then sent to Hank Williams for mastering.
Doc's new release, titled "Toeing The Line" was released in 2005. He showcased the single, Toeing The Line, a remake of the 1980 hit by Rocky Burnette in Nashville during the CMA Music Week, June 9-11, 2005.
Doc performs weekly, having opened shows at The Orpheum Theater in Memphis for the likes of Ricky Van Shelton and numerous others. His charismatic style and performance wins fans wherever he goes.
