London rock band Raised By Swans will be soaring.

Country music star and Hall of Fame inductee Marie Bottrell will be singing a hurtin' tune.

Sarah & Jeff will be singing - and soaring. All these marvels, and more, will be happening at Sunday night's 2011 Jack Richardson Music Awards (JRMA) gala.

Hundreds of London musicians been nominated for the seventh edition of the JRMA - or The Jacks, as they're often called here. Dozens of awards will be handed out in categories ranging from classical to hip hop to country. Performers chosen from the nominees or, like Bottrell, the honorees will excel.

As a member of the JRMA steering committee, I am thrilled to see The Jacks go higher, go bigger on this our seventh edition as the awards honour excellence in local music.

At some point at the London Music Hall on Sunday night, singer and guitarist Sarah Mathieson will go higher. Mathieson will loft herself atop Jefferson Sheppard's doghouse bass. The night will follow Mathieson on up, up, up.

"The one that we did with you, Sometimes You Gotta Cry - that one has a lot of tricks - we're going to do that one, more or less," Sheppard says of the song that also graced a Reaney's Pick lfpress.com video.

By happy coincidence, about 20 of Sunday's nominees have appeared as guests of the weekly lfpress.com video feature. (A selection of those past visits is online at lfpress.com/videos).

Entirely due to Sarah & Jeff's hot country chemistry, their performance was unofficially and enthusiastically voted the sexiest Reaney's Pick ever.

Victoria-born Sheppard arrived in the St. Thomas-London area about 1990. He's played with such bands as Trole. Ottawa-born Mathieson was in Toronto punk band The Blackouts.

They emerged as a duo in London about two years ago.

"What's making it work? Just not stopping," Sheppard says of their busy schedule. They have a recording Whiskey Dancin' from a few months back and a June 3 date at Brantford's Hockeyfest on a bill with Martina McBride and Doc Walker.

The two will be joined by guitarist Jerry Fletcher and drummer Carl Welch on Sunday.

"Sarah & Jeff: sexiest Reaney’s Pick ever?"

I saw Sarah & Jeff briefly tonight on opening night of the Western Fair . . . just outside the Confed building. The truly dynamic duo from London was just as ready to go & please the fans with a tune as they are in this classy country Reaney’s Pick.

Ahem. Is this maybe the sexiest Reaney’s Pick ever? Ask my LFP and lfpress.com co-workers. They will tell you.

Sometimes You Gotta Cry is an instant classic. Sarah & Jeff, it was a treat to see you at the fair. Thanks for joining us on Wednesday. I knew you’d be a great Reaney’s Pick . . . thanks for coming by. - London Free Press

Bio

Many miles down the dusty back roads of South Western Ontario, the roots of country music grow wild in the elements of folk, punk and rock n roll. This unique, natural occurrence could only be harnessed through the music of Doghouse Rose. Award winning singer/songwriting team Sarah Beth and Jefferson Sheppard are harnessing up to tour down the endless road of the traveling musician. With the addition of renowned hotshot Carl Welch on Drums and backup vocals, the opportunity to make an awesome live show even more unforgettable could not be passed up.

After more than 600 shows in only a few years working together, 2012 presented a turning point for the well known acoustic duet 'Sarah & Jeff’ when they made the grab for a Jack Richardson Music Award and then each racked up a London Music Award for Country and Bluegrass. Modestly outgrowing their britches, Sarah Beth and Jefferson intuitively took the next step and laid down the foundation of a solid band with Carl behind the drum kit. As a power trio Sarah, Jeff and Carl started seeing the surge of media attention and better shows with more established recording artists like Marty Stuart, Martina McBride, The Barenaked Ladies, Blackie & The Rodeo Kings, The Oakridge Boys, Elliott Brood, and Tim Hus

As an elemental force to be reckoned with, Sarah and the boys have played with some of the best session players from miles around to deliver a world class show every time. Touring across Canada and Europe within their first year, with just a three-piece band, Doghouse Rose can start a Riot. Often performing with a four or five piece band, sometimes things can get crazy before the first note is even played.

While in the midst of recording their first full-length album Sarah, Jeff and Carl decided on the name Doghouse Rose. The inspiration coming from a dark country tune by Benedicte Braenden. To celebrate becoming an actual band Doghouse Rose decided to release a teaser 4 song E.P. called "No Mercy" which had caught the attention of the hot new indi label "Lets Riot Music" and released on the label in February 2013. Before the E.P. was even out of the starting gate the song "Drag Me Down" was picked up for the Let's Riot compilation Vol 1. and launched into a frenzy of press and radio play.

Now with a great new name and their hot record label "Let's Riot Music", Doghouse Rose are getting set to release their new album in spring 2014
