Formed in November 2007 in Newport Beach California, Dolphin City is an alternative rock band in the style of Arcade Fire, TV on the Radio, and Radiohead. Members include Drew Morgan on guitar/vocals, Eric Scullin on guitar/piano/vocals, Tyler Ellis on bass, and Kevin Bleitz on drums.
The fact that a bandâs recording process began by mixing demos on a Balboa Island Ferry is truth in itself that Dolphin City is not your average band. Dolphin City has distinguished themselves from the BMW clad population of their hometown Newport Beach; they financed their debut album "Discretion" entirely on their own, by working full-time jobs and digging into their savings, as well as selling everything from books and used CDs, to musical equipment, and even their cars. Seeking a chance to perform at a unique venue and to combine music with other forms of art, the band began playing at what is now considered their home stage, eVocal; a local art gallery and clothing manufacturer known as the âVoice of a Creative Arts Lifestyle.â The bands unique performances featured visual spectacles, ranging from people dressed in mandatory white, to clubs filled with bubbles, and video projectors displaying digital and analog visual film art. This helped to set the band apart from other OC bands.
The band released their debut album "Discretion" on their own record label, Dolphin City Records, in October 2008 and sold over 1,000 units in the first three months (and it is still selling strong). The band has played over 50 shows collectively at local Orange County hot-spots like eVocal, La Cave, and Detroit Bar, and LA clubs like The Viper Room and The Key Clubâwith an average nightly draw of 100 people. They have also performed additional shows throughout the Western United States, including California, Arizona and Utah.
Dolphin City has big plans for 2009. In January they performed in Park City and Provo Utah at clubs and private parties for the Sundance Film Festival. They have also been invited to perform in a showcase for the OC Music Awards in early February. They are also preparing a partial worldwide tour for the months of March and April including dates in China, South America, and Europe.
