Bio

Dom Jones is an American born African singer/songwriter, emcee/poet, author, orator, and vocal producer from Oakland, CA. Her rise in the poetry slam world began in high school when she became the president of her school’s poetry club, revamping its structure and organizing one of Vallejo’s first citywide high school poetry slams. In 2006, Dom performed at the Apollo Theatre with the Bay Area’s 2006 Int’l Youth Slam Team, where the team won the title back during Brave New Voices, the International Youth Poetry Slam. For five years, Dom worked with Youth Speaks, the purveyor of Brave New Voices, as a poet mentor spreading the message of literary arts in middle school and high schools across the bay area. She continues to work with Youth Speaks through facilitation and judging at the annual MC Olympics. She also taught Oakland School of the Art’s first spoken word course in spring of 2010 through music/media non-profit Youth Movement Records.

Dom released her mixtape “Champion” in December of 2010, and her first book of poetry, Boss Patois, in August 2013. Boss Patois became the 2014 Runner Up in the San Francisco Book Festival. Dom was also a part of the group The Clique, which released their remake of the song of the same name for International Women's Month in March 2013. She has shared stages with Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Goapele, Dead Prez, and even President Barack Obama. Currently, she is finishing her first album, Wingspan, slated for release in May 2014. Dom's commitment to social justice manifests in many forms. She was published in The Huffington Post, writing about the Opportunity Divide in America for young people of color. Dom, a graduate and champion of the program Year Up (http://www.yearup.org), became President of the Year Up Bay Area Alumni Association in 2012 and co-hosted the 2013 2nd Annual Year Up National Alumni Summit in Boston. She has also worked with many other non-profits facilitating workshops or volunteering her time through performance, including: Bay Area Video Coalition (BAVC), Youth Together, and the Center for Young Women's Development.

Dom released her debut album, Wingspan, in May 2014 to great acclaim. She is currently playing gigs throughout California with her band, Blackbird.

Dom is the founder of multi-media company Dom Empire, and its music subsidiary Dom Jones Music.
