Bio
Dom Italiano is a ‘slow burn’ artist. Some artists burst onto the world stage as prodigies, but others, like Dom, embark on long apprenticeships, carefully honing their craft with patience and purpose.
Born to Welsh and Italian parents in the UK, Dom settled in Australia as a teen. A troubadour from birth, his wandering life and deft turn of phrase allow him a perspective that is instinctive to great storytellers; ‘When you move so often, music becomes your home and songs are like familiar old friends’.
Dom models his writing partly on classic artists such as Paul Simon, Billy Joel, and Paul Kelly and partly on more recent acts like Crowded House, Keith Urban and Tori Amos; ‘I think a songwriter should explore and understand a variety of genres. That way, you can create a catalogue of songs that can move from folk ballads to reggae to country to rock, and still sound like you. It keeps the audience intrigued and allows you to really explore lyric concepts and emotions’.
Dom suggests his guitar style is ‘folky finger-picker meets 80s shred’ and his musical education includes a
Bachelor of Music Performance, 15 years as a professional cover musician and performances supporting acts such as Billy Thorpe, Diesel, Irwin Thomas, Daddy Cool, Belinda Carlisle, Jon Stevens and more.
Equally at home on stage as a solo act, or fronting The Upbeat Mafia, Dom’s affable on-stage persona mirrors his off-stage demeanour; friendly, fun and ‘a bit of a dork’.
