"EVERY SONG TELLS A STORY"

If you like down-home Americana country music, you’ll love The Donny Simonds Band. Mixed with a bit of folklore, this singer/songwriter’s amazing lyrics tug at your heart and the truth. The bands unique sound is Old Bay spicy, influenced by Donny’s Florida roots and life on a shrimp boat proudly named “The Ebby Luz.” His songs express what’s happening in the world today and the melodies linger in your head long after the show is over—delivering a message passed down through generations.

Donny’s alternate country music falls somewhere between John Prine, Boxcar Willie and Mellencamp. The band is a legend within the Hudson Beach community. Donny rules with lead vocals and guitar. Accompanied by extraordinary players like Bob Grant (lead and rhythm guitar), Dudley Mays (bass and vocals) Tim Coudray (drums) and Dick Upright—yep!—that's his real name, (pedal steel and guitar)—fans are foot-stompin’ and enjoying every minute.

The band members have diversified talent with different musical backgrounds. Some have opened for Johnny Lang, Marshall Tucker, John Prine, Junior Brown, NRBQ, Billy Joe Shaver, Joan Ozbourne and Carlene Carter. Simonds writes the songs, sings lead vocals and plays rhythm acoustic guitar and harmonica on select songs. Once a career drummer from the college scene in Northampton, Massachusetts, Bob Grant plays guitar and develops the lead sections for Donny’s songs. Notoriously spontaneous on stage, he’s liable to use a beer bottle for a slide apparatus to get the audience going. Bassist, Dudley Mays also plays keys and guitar. From the blues circuit in the Midwest in a band called The Bangkok Rooster. His vocal range and harmony add to the dynamics of the band. In conjunction with the bass guitar, drummer Tim Coudray creates rhythmic palpitations that hypnotize and possess the audience. New York native, Dick Upright plays electric guitar but his steel pedal creates a range of emotion. Upright is witty and his anecdotes can be hilarious.

Opening acts take the stage but when the Donny Simond’s band is up, it’s a show you don’t want to miss. The fun is outrageous and contagious. The band has a following that fills the venue and if you don’t make reservations, you may have to listen to them play at the door. This up and rising band has two CD's in high demand with a third soon to be released. Audiences can’t get enough!

You can catch the show almost every Thursday night at PAPE KIBO’S in Hudson at 14217 Old Dixie Hwy. Head North on US 19 and turn left at Hudson Avenue. Another quick left and right and you’re in the parking lot. Reservations recommended as it’s almost always a packed house. Doors open at 7:00 PM and the opening act starts at 7:30. There’s a $5.00 cover. Call ahead 727-819-2417. BYOB For more info about DONNY SIMONDS go to www.myspace.com/donnysimondsband.
