Face Down
(Tribute to Jodeci)
From its overtly sexual title, to the suggestive lyrics to the sensual delivery, Face Down is an unapologetic tribute to the female form as only R&B could provide. With vocals that could mesh with his childhood idols K-Ci and JoJo, R&B newcomer Dontae Peeps never intended the Jodeci tribute to be his first single, but after his mixtape "Peepstime" became popular overseas, the song developed legs of its own. Dontae's remake encompasses everything that a great Jodeci record would include; sex appeal, anointed vocals and lyrics that would make most female fans blush, but Dontae manages to update the song, transitioning the bad boy image to 2011 and beyond. "In my option Jodeci was the dopest most prolific r&b group/bands of their time. Although they were rockstars, they brought those soulful harmonies and real substance to R&B. Their style was untouchable and of course they paved the way for a lot of artists today."
As a young vocalist Dontae looked up to groups like Jodeci and performers like Bobby Brown and later Usher, but his career began as a songwriter first. As a teen, Dontae was discovered for his musical abilities and he began writing with some local producers. Years later, his musical journey has taken him around the world and given him the opportunity to write for some of music's biggest and brightest stars.
As the record made its way throughout the underground, the x-rated lyrics were appreciated by males and females alike. "Sex sells," Dontae says simply, "I think every man can relate to how beautiful a woman is when he's sharing an intimate moment with her." With his in-your-face approach to sexuality and women that has earned Dontae a badboy image, reminiscent of several of the heralded bad boys of the past. "Just because a man enjoys sex doesn't make him a bad boy, "Dontae refutes, "I think there is an adventurous side in all of us."
