"Don’t Yell Fire! ‘Summer Sunrise’ Accessibility And Creatively, In The Same Breath!"

Craig Goldberg, founder of Don’t Yell Fire!, was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, – a city of nomads, a Mecca that people from across the world flock to in search of fame and fortune. “I learned a lot about the realities of life growing up in a city like L.A. You see most people’s hopes come crashing down from the heavens and a few people’s dreams come true. Most are picking up the pieces and trying to move on with their lives. You have to truly love being in the industry because it can be tough and unforgiving.”

Goldberg was exposed to a variety of music from a young age- his Mother is an avid music fan and his Father is a veteran drummer of fifty years. “I was spoon-fed everything from The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Stevie-Ray Vaughn, to Al Jarreau and the Allman Brothers,” he says.

In the summer of 2013, Goldberg and the Fabulous Miss Wendy united in the studio and joined Goldberg’s father, Mike, and studio engineer Mike Wolf, to collaborate on the debut single from Don’t Yell Fire!, ‘Summer Sunrise’. “I played rhythm guitar and sang lead vocals. Wendy produced the single, played lead guitar and put down some great harmonies. My father funded the project and laid down a great drum track. Mike Wolf, the studio engineer and owner of Studio 5109, recorded, mixed, mastered and played bass on the track.”

Don’t Yell Fire’s single, Summer Sunrise, displays searing guitars, a dreamy soundscape, superb melody, and lovely contrasting musical tones. The arrangement is full, lush, and oceanic, yet light, simple and unbridled, leaving you no doubt about the quality of the band’s components and the direction in which they are ultimately headed. No matter how you put it, these guys stand out!

If anyone wants to prove to someone that all of the band members are really talented musically, this would be the track to do that with. The song has amazing guitar work, without over-playing or being self-indulgent; just simple and chunky riffs to shift the song into top gear.

As a songwriter, Craig Goldberg’s songwriting has the quality generally bestowed on hit making writers, who are able to capture the listener’s attention within the very first verse. Craig’s full, reedy voice is interwoven well into the music too, giving his writing a certain heartfelt quality. And unlike many of their fellow pop-rockers, Don’t Yell Fire! aren’t afraid to embrace accessibility and reach new heights creatively, in the same breath.

The song is easy to follow, easy to sing along to and catchy in all the right places, but “Summer Sunrise” never becomes overly sweet candy floss, while the tight production and playing keeps it top class.

Armed with a catchy set of musical palettes, keen voice arrangements, and strong melodic tones, Don’t Yell Fire! have created an outstanding single as a teaser for their upcoming 2014 debut album. - Jamsphere Magazine
