Dopey Lopes "Welcome to the Mental Stadium" Potters Field Records.
The punchy rock rhythm of burnout is enough to get you tapping your foot and nodding your head. The lyrics are well written and fit the Rock/Pop/Punk sound... - The New Haven Advocate

"Mike Caito"

LOPES is nothing if not tenacious, writing every song as if it's his defining anthem and occasionally coming up with one. This CD from the same label which brought us two fine Cutler discs is loaded with credible players (Freddy Abong, Rob George, Mike "Stumpy" Neckritz, Tommy Tenz, Peter Breen, Tripod Cats frontman Ray Memery) all along for the big gig in Lopes' recognizable power-chord Stadium, where Westerberg is still God and Paul Stanley is Saint Peter at least. How well it works is entirely up to your moodswing, but the CD has a self-effacing, endearing quality, and you have to give New-Yorker-via-South-County Lopes some props for never being a bandwagon-hopper no mean feat in a fad-soaked genre. - The Providence Phoenix

Bio

David Lopes exploded onto the RI music scene in 1987 with his now legendary band "Two Guys and Another Guy". Together with George Sullivan, Fred Abong and Jon Jones, "TGAAG" created and popularized a new style of rock music called "Power-Pop" or "Progressive Hardcore". TGAAG was at the epicenter of the Providence RI music scene in the late 1980's which included acts like "The Schemers", "Neutral Nation", "That'll Learn Ya", "Rash of Stabbings", "The Jungle Dogs", "The Neighborhoods" plus so many more. Providence RI's "The Living Room" was a must stop for all bands passing through the area. TGAAG was influenced by the Minneapolis scene (including the Replacements and Husker Du), and closer to home, the RI Punk/Hardcore scene which featured "Verbal Assault" and "Positive Outlook". The band flourished from 1987 until 1992 when drummer Fred Abong left to join Throwing Muses. Later George and Jon left to form "Backwash" - one of RI's most revered bands. David went out as a solo act and became "Dopey Lopes" in 1995. He continued to tour with Chris Gorman (formerly of Belly) on Drums and a revolving cast of musicians before finally settling in with his current lineup in 1998 and releasing his first solo CD "Welcome to the Mental Stadium". The record was well received by college radio - getting spins and being placed into heavy rotation at numerous stations east of the Mississippi. After a brief retirement, David re-joined with Two Guys and Another Guy to perform on New Years Eve 2007. That show led to a successful reunion that continues still - with sold out shows. Today we find the artist in his early 40's, back in peak form and writing new material. In December of 08 he joined with 75orless Records and released a compilation CD called "No Qualms". His song "Girl in the Pizza Store Window" was featured by Largehearted Boy as a daily download and still is receiving accolades. David continues to perform with Two Guys and his solo act "Dopey Lopes". This dual set features his best material from over the years and has been widely celebrated. His last two performances (July and August 2009) were sold out. His fall dates were exceptionally well attended. The CD "Live" is now available - go to www.75orlessrecords.com for more info.
