How Much Ain't Enough

Written By: Doug Irwin

I'll take out the garbage when it's piled up higher than the door.
And when the dog won't eat off of it,
Might even sweep and mop the floor.
And those Christmas lights, hangin' off the house
From the year before.

No matter how much I don't ever seem to get done,
You're always wantin' more…

How much ain't enough?

You know it don't fuel the work ethic in me, hon,
When I been out all day workin' 'neath the blazin' sun,
And you come home from card chargin', havin' your fun,
And say, "You know I really thought you'd have more done."

How much ain't enough?

Well, how much ain't enough?
I'd like to know,
But since I don't then I guess what I've got to show
Means I've still got a long row to hoe.
Baby, how much…
How much ain't enough?

Now when I get home, I like to kick back,
Pick up the old guitar, a beer and relax,
But now I'm goin' for a second opinion to ask,
If I need to have you surgically removed from my back.

How much ain't enough?

Yeah, I could build the seven wonders of the world,
Each in a day,
When I was done I'm sure you'd still find somethin' to say,
Like, "I see you didn't put all your tools away."
Baby, how much…
How much ain't enough?

Heard tell I'm half the man I used to be,
Well half of what's left would rather be watchin' TV,
And doin' somethin' quarter-assed believe you me,
Only means you'll hear about it for all eternity.

How much ain't enough?

Now when I start a job, well you always question
My conviction, motivation and my dedication,
Thought by now you'd've lowered your expectations
Baby, how much…
How much ain't enough?

Well, how much ain't enough?
I'd like to know,
but since I don't then I guess what I've got to show
means I've still got a long row to hoe.
Baby, how much
How much ain't enough?

Rattle the Cage

Written By: Doug Irwin

Proud and noble warrior,
Steps slowly from the plane.
Honor-bound when duty called,
Where others turned and walked away.
His right side bears the battle scars,
All twisted, torn and lame.
Now, how he dare decries all their reasons why,
Shouts to the sky to rattle the cage.

Rattle the cage, rattle the cage,
Misled, used and betrayed.
Young men with so much to lose,
Old men with so much more to gain.
Sad sign of our times when the bottom line’s
Worth more than the price thousands have paid.
Now you pray that each side of this great divide,
Can see the signs to rattle the cage.

Slow and simple Delta man on a roof,
Stranded there for days.
His Mama said, “I love you, but the Lord is callin’.”
Then he watched the waters carry her away.
Now he’s held in a cell to protect himself,
Won’t ever be the same.
One look into his eyes,
You see it’s way past time
To stand with him and rattle the cage.

Rattle the cage, rattle the cage.
Disbelief, anger and shame.
Then it turned into a nightmare circus,
With elephants and clowns on parade.
Most folks only crime is they were left behind,
And put their faith in those who were saved.
Wipe away those tears he cries
And look through his eyes,
And then rise to rattle the cage.

(instrumental)

Well, they’ll look you in the eye,
and they’ll smile real wide,
And then they’ll lie right to your face.
But I believe they speak the truth when they say
They are not the ones to blame.
It’s We the People,
They see now just outside their gates,
And all around their walls,
Who’ve heard the call,
To grab the bars and rattle the cage.

Rattle the cage, rattle the cage,
Until the door’s hangin’ from it’s frame.
For purple mountains majesties,
And amber waves of grain.
Stand out, step up, reach down,
And seize what remains of the day.
Like Woody says, “Stick up for what you know is right.”
Grab the bars and rattle the cage.
