DOWNIE HAILSTONE

Just Ask Me

Downie Hailstone has a very attractive voice and a passionate delivery. She had musical training early on, performing jazz, pop and classical music while developing an open-minded approach. After graduating from Brigham Young University, Ms. Hailstone spent a period in which she performed jazz standards at a variety of venues in Tokyo, including regularly at the Four Season's Hotel. Upon returning to the United States, she settled in Western Michigan where she has performed on a regular basis ever since.

Just Ask Me is an EP that features Downie Hailstone singing six of her originals. Joined by pianist-keyboardist Darius Plimpton (who co-wrote three of the songs and contributed the arrangements), a fine rhythm section and guest trumpeter Keaton Akins, the singer is heard throughout in prime and memorable form.

The six songs all deal with different aspects of love, from the hopeful “A Different Kind Of You” and “Love Comes” to the yearning “Another Sleepless Night” and a thoughtful “The Simple Things.” The music ranges from the swing ballad “Just Ask Me” (which has Keaton Akins quoting “Sleepy Time Down South”) to the rockish “Love Comes,” the rollicking “Another Sleepless Night” to the catchy “Lover.” Throughout the program, Downie Hailstone's powerful voice, sincerity, and purposeful singing commands one's attention.

Just Ask Me is an important step forward in the career of Downie Hailstone.

"Truley Beautiful"

"Downie's exquisite phrasing and soulful, emotional interpretations will truly move you. She feels the songs deeply and it shows. She not afraid to front a group of adventurous musicians that challenge her range and are unconventional without overshadowing her. Grab this CD!"

Sophisticated, poised and melodic, jazz artist and vocalist Downie Hailstone will once again grace the stage of The Grand Theatre Bar for two live performances on July 10 and Aug. 1.
Downie, a Grand Haven resident, received rave reviews as a regular featured artist at Four Seasons Hotel in Tokyo, Japan. Her return to The Grand is by popular demand.
While in Tokyo, Downie also performed to sell-out crowds at Astro Hall, The Cotton Club, Birdland, the Sheratin Bay View Lounge, Jazz Melody Line and the B Flat Club.
One of the finest live performers on the jazz scene, Downie has been noted as exceptionally gifted. She commands stages with grace as she brings the art of vocal jazz to new fans of this rare art form.
Downie’s two upcoming shows at “The Grand” Theatre Bar in Grand Haven will display her sophisticated jazz style to the accompaniment of some very hip West Michigan musicians:
Her show July 10 will feature jazz pianist Walley Michaels of Chicago, acoustic bassist Kaja Lill of Grand Valley State University and Entourage’s drummer Timmy Sanders.
