Bio
Hook-laden Finnish energy
Known for their recklessly energetic live appearances, Downstairs have developed themselves a truly fascinating sound. Compared to leading names of experimental punk and rock (At The Drive-In, Fugazi, Refused), the Helsinki-based four-piece combine influences from furious hardcore passion to catchy pop melodies not to forget electronic buzz. The power of this hook-laden mixture has become obvious: Both debut EPs Shotgun Hullabaloo (released in 2005) and mini-album Coward Constrictor Cries For Chivalry, released the following year, have received wide interest in the local indie scene, among pop and punk fans alike.
For a band releasing their debut full length album, Downstairs have a lot of history behind them: brothers Otto and Topi formed the group over ten years ago together with their mutual childhood friend Asmo. Although their debut album isnt released until now, no-one can blame Downstairs for being lazy. Besides being busy releasing material on a DIY basis and thus developing their sound, the band has had time to play over a hundred sweaty shows, including supporting several international top-acts such as The Locust, Raised Fist and Blindside. In the year 2006, following the release of their second EP, the band made two tours in Eastern Europe playing small clubs and totally packed squats. All the hard work hasn´t gone unnoticed in their homeland either. With the support of their slowly but surely growing following behind them, Downstairs have begun to make a name for themselves as Finlands most interesting rising alternative band.
The groups hard work ethics were finally rewarded as Downstairs inked a record deal with local Fullsteam Records in October 2007. The first single Peephole City of their debut album (to be released in early 2008) has received international interest well before its release date being the song of the week on both BBCs Radio1 Rock Show (UK) and Filter Magazine (US). In November 2007 the band will tour Germany for five shows with their label mates Sweatmaster.
