Dr Charlie

“Dr Charlie” is the musical vehicle of blues artiste Kevin “Charlie” Scott, an exceptionally powerful and emotive vocalist and a sensational Blues guitar virtuoso.
Kevin’s background forms the basis of the bands musical “personality” and results in a style that recalls the Blues greats of the English 60’s blues movement and is highly influenced by the early Chicago blues bands. Selected for their ability to produce the desired “sound” so important to his music, Kevin is supported by some of the best blues musicians that W.A. has to offer.
In his own words, here is Kevin’s story;

Born in1950, I was raised Gravesend (South East London)
When I was ten years old, my brother, a professional singer, would take me to see the rock stars of the era at the Two Eyes Coffee bar in Soho. Inspired by their example, I began playing in 1961. Early influences were Jerry Lee Lewis; Gene Vincent, and Joe Brown.

In 1962 /3 I witnessed “The American Blues Caravan” visiting the UK. And my musical direction was formed. I was spellbound by Rosetta Tharpe; Chuck Berry; Freddie King;

Early local group members included Geoff Whitehorn, later to find fame with “If” and “Procal Harem”; and Tony Catchpole, later guitarist with “Alan Bown set”.
Another early influence was Keith Moon, later the drummer with “the Who”. Keith was a family friend and next door neighbour of my cousin. During visits and school holidays we would regularly “jam”.

In 1965 I joined my first “professional” band, called “Flee-Rakers”. Based in Dartford, (Kent) and fronted by Mick Cox former lead guitar with Georgie Fame
I also had a short stint with “the Blues Syndicate”. Then fronted by Kevin “King” Lear. Former members included John Mayall and Alexis Corner.

In 1967 I formed “Plague” with Roger Humphries, former bass player with “Screaming Lord Sutch”. Plague enjoyed a modicum of success, touring with and opening for most of the top British acts of the day including;
Fairport Convention; Manfred Man; Joe Cocker; Groundhogs & Chicken Shack;
Plague at various times were supported by; The Love affair; Sweet; Paper Lace; Pink Floyd.

Management and record deals did not produce commercial success and “Plague” folded in 1971. Various other bands followed and in 1976, I again joined Roger with his band “Bite The Bullet” (check Roger out on my space.com) playing country rock. Roger and the band are still active throughout Europe today. I left the band in 78 and later migrated to Australia.

I have been performing in Western Australian blues festivals and clubs as Dr Charlie since 2006. The act has featured at

• South West Blues Club
• Perth Blues Club
And has been invited to perform at
• Australian Blues festival (Goulburn NSW)
• Himalayan Blues Festival (Nepal)
• Glastonbury (UK)
In November 2007 I recorded “Three Good Reasons” a promotional DVD specifically for radio and internet exposure. My interpretation of “Worried Life Blues” was voted runner up at this years “Australian Blues Music Awards” and another original song from the DVD, “Find em, Love em and Leave em” was voted as runner up in the international song writing awards.

I will be recording the first “Dr Charlie” full length CD (Downtown Cruzin with Dr Charlie) in December of this year.
