"Dresden, glasgow barfly, 04/11/05"

Electro/Indie crossovers, eccentric clothing, synthesisers and a style throwback from the 80’s have been dominating the music scene over the past couple of years. Thankfully Dresden have created the reason why there’s no need to trade in your Harley Davidson for a Volvo Estate just yet.

Dresden are keeping faith to the simplified rock n roll formula introduced by The Stooges and The Jesus and Mary Chain; Fraught energetic riffs and attention grabbing power chords ground down into dirty, guitar fuelled rock. Nostalgia trip it may be, but its one hell of a trip.

Similarities in the current music scene can be drawn to The Black Velvets, BRMC and The Beat Up, all harbouring that leather smelling, beer swilling, distortion orientated vibe that The Ramones championed.

‘Crusader’ Sounds rather like The Subways’ ‘City Pavement’, but has a far stronger drive to it, complimented by the thumping bass intro. ‘Save My Soul’ shares the same influences as The Datsuns and more often than not you can hear the sound of 60’s American bands like MC5 beneath the surface of Dresden’s onslaught.

If the future of rock n roll is Dresden, then the future of music is definitely rock n roll.

"Nice 'n' Sleazy, 28/09/05"

A big healthy dollop of Rock n Roll was the last order of the day, in the shape of Dresden, yet another Glasgow band. Offering 9 meaty morsels of pure, unadulterated Rock n Roll (baby!) they more than satisfied the crowd’s hunger with some trouser-flappingly loud drumming and searing red hot guitar licks! That wasn’t a metaphor… the PA was cranked up and my trousers REALLY were flapping!!! As it happened the change of line up was a wise turn of events as Dresden were the ideal act to end the night on!

‘Save My Soul’ opens with a classic rock riff, before thundering along like a freight train with The Strokes and Oasis performing an open-air gig on the roof. Being a fairly tall bunch there wasn’t much headroom between them and the low ceiling, especially for the extra tall singer, who was stood under a beam. Not allowing this to hamper their set, they continued to tear along with their infectious, melodic and up-beat brand of Rock. “He only speaks for the Jesus freaks!” typified the catchy lyrics in ‘Crusader’, a song worthy of a top ten hit in any chart! This band are well accomplished and gel together well with good rhythm and lead interaction.

Tonight was certainly a showcase of the kind of talent this fine city can rightly boast about. If only people would get off their backsides and give top class bands like this the scores of screaming, adoring fans that they surely deserve! - Andy Inglis, glasswerk.co.uk

"2006: THE ESSENTIALS"

Want to know what we will be looking at, listening to and snapping up in the coming 12 months? Well, you've come to the right place - Email's guide to who, what and where will be cooler than cool in our rundown of things to come in 2006...

DRESDEN

DRESDEN are what you'd get if you put The Stooges, MC5 and The Jesus And Mary Chain into a blender.

The Glasgow band formed in 2004, fronted by singer Ian McKinnon with Robert McGovern (guitar), Stuart Smith (bass) and Andy Kerr (drums).

Their self-financed debut EP, Save My Soul - out on February 9 - is the best Scottish release in years. - Sunday Mail, January 1st 2006

"Barfly 13/03/05"

Playing to a half empty Barfly at 8.30pm on a Sunday night, is most bands idea of a nightmare gig, but its one that doesn’t seem to faze Glaswegians Dresden. There are a few people hanging around the edges of the venue, but they seem to relatives and friends of the band just there to give their support.
As the band begins their set, a few more eyes are turned towards the stage.
Dresden have a sound a lot heavier than what their image would have you believe. The noise that emanates from the Barfly is somewhere between the primal feedback filled sounds of BRMC and the pulsating basslines and catchiness of Supergrass. There is the odd hint of Oasis here and there which does work well as do the vocals which tie in nicely with the music.
By the end of the set, the venue is a lot fuller and the scattered applause has given way to a few cheers!
It seems a great Sunday evening was had by all. - www.noiseannoys.co.uk

Bio

Keepin' the rock 'n' roll fires burnin' is thirsty work, so in these times
of great drought where even a drop of musical sewerage is fought over and
lapped up as if it is the very nectar of life itself, it is from the heavens
that we have been sent a life giving monsoon. And that, brothers and sisters
is Dresden. Raining down on us like carpet-bombs, blowing away the stagnant present with a six string razored attack and panzer division drums, they wash the tuneless mud from our feet down the gutter of banality. Breast fed by the Stooges, nurtured by Sonic Youth and finally educated in the ways of this wicked but beautiful world by their fathers the MC5, Dresden don't look for answers, they look for questions. The first of these questions was delivered in early February 2006 with the release of debut single “Save my Soul” on cd and 10” vinyl.

The band have made two appearances at Alan McGee’s Death Disco club night in London. The former has also championed Dresden on his radio 1 slot and the band recently performed a 6 song live session on Billy Sloan’s Clyde 1 show (Jan 29th). Vic Galloway (radio 1/radio Scotland) and Jim Gellatly (XFM Scotland) have also contributed in abundance to the assault on the airwaves.

In the last 18 months Dresden have supported the likes of Wolfmother, The View, Mando Diao and The Fratellis.
