Bio

Hailing from the bright lights of Auckland City, DRIVETOWN is a dynamic four-piece rock band with a live reputation as big as the sound they produce. Formerly called Afratone, the band's new name reflects a change in direction and maturity. They make music that is at once catchy and likeable, but aggressive and penetrating at the same time.

Drivetown was formed in April 2007 under the name ‘Afratone’, when singer/guitarist Konrad Kurta met hard-hitting drummer James Porteous, one of the most committed men you will ever meet in rock. Chance meetings with bassist Sam Comery resulted in a series of rehearsals which sparked a musical connection producing one of the most gritty and passionate live bands in New Zealand.

With just their second and third live performances, the boys had won the AUT Battle of the Bands in late 2007.

Dozens of hard-hitting live performances soon followed, with the band being booked for numerous orientation performances around New Zealand, coinciding their first release, the now sold-out 2008 EP entitled ‘Lights and Shades’, as well as a shoestring budget video for the song ‘Disappear', which received rotation on NZ's music networks Alt TV and Juice TV.

April 2008 was a highlight, with the band being asked to open for Pluto at the University Games opening ceremony in Rotorua... it would prove to be a performance befitting of the week that followed, with singer Kurta entertaining a 2000-strong crowd of drunk revellers in rock & roll fashion. The final piece in the Drivetown jigsaw fell into place in May, when John Faulding joined the lineup, on keyboard and guitar - simultaneously at times – to become the band’s fourth permanent member. 2008 finished with slots beside Deja Voodoo, The Electric Confectionaires, and many others. The band spent countless hours practising and writing at their second home – the isolation booths at ‘Drivetown’ in suburban Auckland – over this period.

2009 has started with a bang, as Drivetown sharing the stage with New Zealand music heavyweights The Mint Chicks and Shihad over Orientation Week in Auckland. The band would sport an even heavier, more complex and layered sound... and a new name that reflected both their second home and the nature of the city they lived in - Drivetown.

Aiming to transfer their explosive live presence to the airwaves independently, the self-funded first single ‘This Day, Four Years’, is a catchy alt-rock monster "constructed around the idea of breaking the intense monotony of life", according to the enigmatic Kurta. Drivetown have also begun recording a full-length album aimed for release in 2010. Says the band, "We are doing it right - it's going to be a huge album. Cohesive, detailed, intense. "

Drivetown throw themselves headlong into a music industry that may not know who they are, but will definitely have heard them coming. Stay tuned.
