Andrew Reissiger and Rob McMaken don't resort to flashy displays of virtuosity. They let strong melodies and intricate arrangements speak out their mastery of the instrument. Listeners may be somewhere in Central America or around the Mediterranean Sea, sitting around a gypsy campfire or with a caravan of Bedouins.

With their fourth full-length release, the multi-instrumental duo Dromedary reveals an entirely new band: Dromedary Quartet. While their initial releases featured the interplay of two acoustic instruments exploring a variety of the world’s music – from Portuguese to Appalachian to Eastern European, North African, and even some Radiohead – Dromedary Quartet expands these boundaries of both improvisation and composition. If it was difficult to choose a genre for Dromedary before (World/Jazz/Folk/Acoustic/Chamber), it is even harder to classify Dromedary Quartet, though their music – assisted by drummer Jeff Reilly and bassist Neal Fountain – is likely to reach an even larger audience with its strong grooves and larger sound.

This music weaves its way in and out of traditional ethnic string band textures with all the fluidity and spontaneity of jazz. Dromedary Quartet’s performances are hypnotic and spontaneous like a great jazz show, yet imaginative, earthy, and transcendent like many world music performances.
As a duo, Dromedary (Andrew Reissiger and Rob McMaken) has toured the USA and Europe extensively, “cruising through a veritable history of folk music with overwhelming musical talent and dizzying fretboard mastery.*” They’ve released 3 intimate records featuring the Bolivian charango, European mandolin, Turkish cumbus, Appalachian dulcimer, and Spanish guitar, and have been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered and Mountain Stage. Though only an instrumental duo, presenters around the country have found Dromedary’s show worthy of being on the bill with everybody from jam-band Sound Tribe Sector 9 to jazzman Dave Douglas, Cuban master Barberito Torres, and bluegrass’s Jerry Douglas. With the addition of a world-class rhythm section (featuring bassist Neal Fountain and percussionist Jeff Reilly), Dromedary Quartet is now a full-fledged band with a life, sound, and album all its own.
