Drowning Clowns members are all veterans to the music scene including; Mike Speranzo (co-owner of Together Holdings, Mr. Smalls Theatre, Skatepark and Recording Studio), Frank Spadafora (worked with Speranzo before in critically acclaimed band CRISIS CAR of Pittsburgh), Liz Berlin (Speranzo’s wife, solo artist, member of multi-platinum recording group Rusted Root, and co-owner of Mr. Smalls operations). In addition, probably 90% of Pittsburgh's most gifted musicians have collaborated or contributed to the recording in some way.

The live band includes Mike, Frank, Liz and also Dirk Miller (The Speeds, Dirk Miller Allstars, Rusted Root), Jere Bucek (The Wheels, Crisis Car), Nate Campesi (Airplane Graveyard), Evan Smith (DC/Independant/Element Skateboarder)

For the last 5 years Mike Speranzo has been like a scientist in a secret lair, meticulously crafting this album piece by piece, nursing notions like babies, editing sound like a sculptor digging and shaving to find the crux. Slowly Mike has groomed this album into a stunning collaboration with Frank Spadafora, Liz Berlin, and actually, most of Pittsburgh. Frank and Mike have been playing in bands together since college but with this project they have found a new level of collaborative freedom together. And with the addition of Liz Berlin’s vocals, a blending occurred between the three creating a new voice beyond male and female, lead and background, lyric and sound.

Mike Speranzo knows burden.
And you can feel it seeping through every beat of the Drowning Clowns record. This is the underlying and mostly elusive ether of reality that lies below what most people would see and call success.

Mike is the owner and developer of Pittsburgh’s Mr. Smalls empire, builder and developer of Mr. Smalls Theatre, which has become one of the most well respected concert venues in the country. He was the first developer and director of the now world-renowned extreme sports program at Woodward Camp which prefaced his decision to build his own Mr. Smalls Skatepark. He is engineer and producer of many of Pittsburgh’s most praised CD’s (such a Crisis Car’s Skychairmaker and New Invisible Joy’s debut), bass player and songwriter in many bands starting with Out Of The Blue in the early 90’s to Crisis Car to any number of studio projects and recordings from Pittsburgh’s plethora of talent. On top of all this Mike is a father and husband to a successful touring musician in her own right.

Between all of this, when does he unwind? Pretty much . . . never.
Owning your own business isn’t all it’s cracked up to be --more stress than profit. You loose your life, your money and most of your friends along the way in hopes that one day the formula will all work out. Balancing that with your music and family is even more of an enigma. When you build your dreams on such a large scale, life gets really heavy.

So who new that all this time Mike Speranzo was secretly singing and picking an acoustic guitar, writing the beautiful beginnings of what has now become the Drowning Clowns debut CD. This music is the one place where Mike can pour his soul, his stress, his sorrow, his burden, and the pool will always swell enough to hold it.
